It turns out I had a slight tear in the rear left outer boot. I replaced it and ran the machine, but could still hear a slight noise. I pulled the right CV shaft and checked it over and it seemed all right. I have only tar roads to test drive it on, which is not good. I will be up north and try it next weekend. I cannot pinpoint the noise when I run it on blocks. A little frustrating. I'll post anything I find out. A service guy told me that noise usually comes from the splines on the CV shaft slipping in the rearend. I just don't see that.

I don't think that it is the axle splines slipping in the rear end, if it was, you would have bigger troubles than just a clicking noise. Eek

Maybe he ment the splines in the outter hub? that is where I think it may be coming from, it may be that the nut needs to be re-torqued to take away any play that might be there???

We will see, I'm checking mine tomarrow.

I found where mine was clicking and it was the hub bearing that was going into the crapper

Was it a rear bearing?

That is what I was not wanting to hear, $$$$$ where does it stop??? New bearings every 1000 miles????? Shrug

I hope mine is just the hubs, but I know I'll find the bearings need to be replaced, they are slightly loose but my 98 500 is worse.

Maybe I should look at it and do both machines at the same time... Eek

I would look at them and probably replace them on both. The federal mogul cross for mine was posted on here. I found it in the FAQ section. I found my bearings at O'reilly's for $25 each with a little can you help a brother out conversation to the parts guy. Mine blew out on a trail 5 miles in so I had no choice but limp it out so it ruined a hub carrier. I will replace mine every 1k whether needed or not. I looked for where mine was clicking for a while and found it that night...

You sure it's the rear end and not your belt? Mine was making this clunking noise and it turned out to be the belt.

Thought I'd post what I found with my "clicking noise"

I got my machine up in the air on my lift and pulled the rear wheels (my noise was coming from the left rear the loudest and maybe the right also but not noticeable) I noticed a crack in the curved washer under the castle nut, so I removed the nut and there were 2 washers there and both of them were cracked and the surface of the washers at the crack were not flat. (causing the clicking noise?)

So to make sure that the bearings were OK and not making the noise, I took the rest of it apart and pulled the bearing apart to see what the inside of them looked like, everything was in great shape, so I cleaned them all up, repacked the bearings and put them back together, careful not to damage the seals, and reassembled everything, I removed the curved washers from the assembly and did not get new ones to put it back together, I used some thick stainless washers that I had to replace them. (I did the other side also and one of the washers were cracked on that side too)

I took it for a ride and the "Clicking Noise" is gone, it is nice and quite and works great, 2thumbs

Big Grin No more noise...
