I have been PMing Cajun on this topic....

I have the Stealth 800 EFI, which as we all know produces a lot of heat on the right side, especially around the AWD emblem panel. Also, I have the Full Dual Wileyco exhaust system which produces a little more heat than stock. I am sending my Wileyco headers to Jet Hot to get their 1300 degree Ceramic Coating applied to them. This coating will be applied and oven dried on the inside and outside of the header to reduce transient heat, thus less right leg and crotch discomfort or plastic melting. Jet Hot quoted me $120 for this application. There is another company called performance coatings that does it as well.

I have talked to several guys with 700 and 800 cc engines who have had the plastic melt or become brittle and crack(polaris needs to address this obviously). It is about a one week process(take off exhaust ship and get back) and you may be able to get it done cheaper than Jet Hot, but well worth the peace of mind.

Not to mention...

I have been planning to do the same with my 800 header. Just need to get time to call them and set it up. I haven't melted the plastic yet, but I can definitely tell it is going to happen soon if I don't do something.

It is the price we pay for POWER. It is unfortunate that Polaris has not addressed this issue already. They should coat the stock headers, especially on the right side. Other than this one small issue with my Stealth, everything else is a dream... BEST EVER.

my 800 header is coated by Jet-Hot and works very well, no melting, but I also added more heat shield tape to the plastic just in case:

Hey Elkbow

That is sweet looking. I am getting mine done in the flat black, because not sure how the chrome finish will match the Wileyco Can. I am also going to use heat wrap just in the one foot area near the AWD emblem on the right side. I know heat wrap is not good for the motor, but putting it on that small section should not hurt.

Another thing you have to consider that adds heat is if you’ve done mods to help the engine breathe better. The stock FI may not be able to compensate enough for higher flow air filers and performance exhaust which may contribute to lean running and produce more heat.

Within the next few weeks I hope to be dyno testing a Dobeck / TFI fuel injection control module on a 700, 800 and 700 Ranger. Since this unit basically richens the mix one of the things I’ll be looking at is the difference in temp at the head-pipe connection.

I think he meant the pipe. Go here for the reasons.

Also beware of cheap imitations of ceramic coatings. The Big Gun pipe I bought for my 500 allegedly had a ceramic coating. It did nothing for heat retention.

i wouldn't wrap a pipe, just my opinion, its easier to put heat shield on the plastic and doesn't make the pipe look like crap and hard to clean...

I used Performance Coatings to do the the pipe from header to exhaust tip. I thought it would make a little bit of difference, but it made a lot of difference. One of the best things I've done. Remember, electrical componets 2 biggest enemies is heat and dirt, can't do much about the dirt, but we can reduce the heat considerably.

I know heat wrap is not good, if you wrap the entire header. I am only going wrap a small section where the header and heat shield come close to the side wall, maybe a foot or so.

Mine did not melt and may never melt. I am doing this to prevent any damage. You will see when you get yours, that the heat is mostly on the right side where the AWD emblem is.
You could just put the heat wrap on the header in that area and probably be OK. Do not put heat wrap on the entire header, just in that one foot or so section.

Hey Corey

Clutch kit was put in today and I went with the Heel Clicker recommendations, use the weights and the 4.5,4.5,4.5 screw set up.

The ceramic coating comes in many colors, but I went with flat black(same as the Stealth).

Look at this thread. There is a specific bend you have to make in the linkage to clear the sheild. The instructions will tell you what to do. It worked like a charm for me.
