I am trying to get my right rear axle out to replace the inner boot. Does it pop out of the rear gearcase or is there a snap-ring somewhere holding it in. I know this topic has been beat to death, but I'm not having any luck getting it out. Someone suggested using the hub as a slide hammer, but I tryed that. No luck. Maybe I need to try harder. I didn't want to break something.

After Metro sent me the service manual I knew what to do. Get a bigger hammer. It took about 20 very hard slams using the hub as a slide hammer, and it popped out. There was a good bit of corrosion in the splines probably from a lot of mud riding. I had to hit the CV joint real hard with a brass drift and a ball peen hammer to knock it off the shaft, all the while trying to spread the snap-ring open. Now that I know what to do, its a piece of cake.

Thanks to Metro!

use a utility knife and just cut the old boot off. Now clean the grease out and locate the retainer clip and spread it open and the shaft will slide right out of the cv. Slide the new boot on the shaft and reinsert the shaft to the cv with the new grease in it. Put your clamps on and your done, all without removing it from the diff.

Add plenty of Anti-Sieze to the splines before you reinsert it. Very helpful for future removal.
