A friend of mine has a 2002 400 Polaris Sportsman. His speedometer, 4*4 switch, and a few other items (I think main lights) all quit working at the same time. Any ideas what controls all of these functions? Someone told him that it is the ignition, but I do not understand that. The quad starts fine. He also said that he checked the fuses and all are okay. Thanks

They are all connected through the speedo. It needs a new speedo and everything will be back to normal. There is a way to bypass it but I dont remember, I think it maybe the 2 brown wires coming out of the speedo. but dont quote me on it. been a long time and its not the "right" way to fix it!

It is not the speedometer because we just swapped speedometers with another Sportsman. The problem is the same with the working speedometer. Any other ideas?

Check for a broken ground wire. Look at the end of the wire harness where all the wires seperate from the main loom near the Pod.

Mine did the same thing when I first got it. Look at the wiring running out of the bottom of the pod. We found a broken wire in the harness. When I hooked it back up everything worked fine. 4x4 speedo and everything came back on. I think it was a yellow wire, maybe a brown and yellow. They were pulled kinda tight in the harness and it just broke. I hope this is helpful, and not too late.

Yep ground wire on mine too fixed it all when I fixed the wire. I thought I had put a picture of the break on here before might have been another site...I can't seem to post pics here

Well here is my final post when I fixed mine:

Well just in case anyone does a search for this type of issue I thought I would post an answer to this issue. Quick recap, ECM was ok (new one did nothing) dealer said there was a broken wire either power or ground that feed up to the speedo area that was intermittent, needed a new harness. Well i found the broken wire soldered it back together sealed it up and all is great! It was a ground that went from the high beam headlight to the speedo plug and it was broken where it exited the wire loom, not sure if there was a sharp point there at one time or just a poor wire from the start. But it is possible to find that needle in the haystack!

Ok and here is a link to the pictures
