Howdie everyone...

'03 700sp carb... overheated from failed water pump... Failed because the alum water pump cover didn't fit correctly...

Flushed the entire cooling system, removed remnants of old impeller... installed new impeller and old pump housing (the one that origionally fit) and started the quad to operating temp...

I noted oil dripping from the valve cover and a glowing hot Ypipe... Checked the radiator for impeller flow -it was working fine.

so what now?... smoked the rings? head gasket leak? all of the above?

The pipes wil glow when everything is up to temp. How does it run? No water in the Oil? If it is running poorly do a Compression test if it is running good fix the oil leak and go riding.

Well... I think that the valve cover (plastic) was warped... I did see some small bubbles (3 or 4 smaller than the size of a pencil eraser) at the coolant cap...
I did run the machine in the field (dove season) for some observation... never overheated -but ran a little rough (carb bogging down/cutting out)... Oil just dripping from valve cover onto Y-pipe... Didn't see any serious indication of blow-by (no smoke or gobbs of oil in the intake)...

K, Dave...

The plastic cover definatley needed replacement... Had warped on the bottom side close to the y-pipe... Now have shiney new alum cover.
But i'm still running rough... Think I'll do a carb needle/jet overhaul and change the plugs -but i did have iridiums in there from a couple of years ago -and new plug wires...
Anything else I need to check from an overheated engine?
I've got rough idle that tries to smooth out after warmup... then it will just die at some point at idle... Boggs slightly when reving in neutral... backfires slighlty -not like it would if there was an adapter leak.

Update:

Well, before I got into the carb, I decided to fix the exhuast leak... The doughnut below the y-pipe had some premature wear and was leaking pretty good -prolly from when it got overheated.

While I was into it -I decided to paint the pipe with high temp flat black...
I spent the afternoon prepping the exhaust (removed) with a wire wheel and a rust wheel (on a drill)... Then put a couple of coats down on the pipe and silencer... waited about 45min for quick dry, reinstalled, and did a little bake dry (with some engine exhuast heat)... The longest of the process was prepping!

Some good news: with a little seafoam in the gas and the exhaust leak fixed, my battle scarred '03 700 started purring right again!
But then I noticed a torn rear outer CV boot. : (

I had a FEW leaks in my exhaust on my 04.5 and it was running rough and back firing and had a little performance loss.. THEN the dang pipes broke off at the head!!!! It started getting louder, got off to look and it was cracked!! tried to get back to truck and before I got there one of the pipes broke off, then right before I got it loaded the other did... After some welding in THREE different spots, it no longer back firs, the irratic idle is gone, and it seems to run better.. I still got a little leak at the silencer, it is a pure polaris/white bros silencer and the piece that the gasket goes in for the pipe broke at the weld there too.. That thing was in a BIND for some reason.. We bent the pipe so that it is not in a bind anymore so it boltsup fine now.. Good for a quick fix....
Gonna buy a new exhaust for it soon.... Don't know how long the weld will hold...
