Hello,

It's my son's 2004 Honda TRX400EX. To start it, turn key on, push start button, catches almost immediately. But if you use just the choke, it will die in just a few seconds. You have to keep the idle way high with the thumb throttle or it will die. You have to continue to do this until the motor is really hot - maybe 5 minutes. After it has been running for a good while, and you stop and then re-start it, it will not need the extended warm up period. But if you stop the motor for a little longer period of time, you're back to having to over rev the motor for a long time again.

Any ideas of what I can do to fix this? I do have a Clymer's repair manual.

Thank you!

Chip

I wonder if the carb is a little dirty, preventing the fuel flow through the enrichening passages, or the jets.

Is the gas old, is the air cleaner cleaned and properly oiled? Any modifications to the engine?

I would remove the carb and give it a good cleaning.

My Rincon is cold blooded,(as are most Hondas I have been around) but It will idle with the choke pulled out with out reving the engine.

There might be some helpful info in this article??

Thank you for the reply
Bike is pure stock.
Brand new spark plug, air filter is clean and oiled, gas - had a small amount of older gas, but then added 3/4 tank of brand new gas.
I'll pull the carb and give it a good cleaning.
I'll report back when I'm finished, but it might be a while as I have a lot on my plate.

Thanks again,

Chip
