When you are buying a quad lets say for example;

You are interested in an Outlander 800EFI for $8,100, or the Outlander 800EFI XT for $8,600. That is a $500 price difference.

Or you are interested in a SP 800EFI for $8100, or the SP 800EFI Deluxe for $9200. That is a $1000 price difference.

What I am trying to get at, are you more comfortable spending an extra $300, $500, or $1000 for a particular feature or machine? What is your price breaking point? Of course everyone wants to pay for the lower amount, but what is too much for you or most people when it comes to upgrading or getting an additional feature?

Depends on the extra I am getting. I will pay a bit more to the dealer for an item installed rather than get the item post buy and install it myself.

Didn't matter, That pretty blue only came on the deluxe model. Slap

Not really, on my X2 last November, retail difference was $700. Dealer's selling price in Cheyenne was less than that. $600 difference if I remember. For that I got a winch mounted, Aluminum wheels and ADC, even though I wasn't sure what that was or did at the time. I figured it was probably something I wanted. 2thumbs

So paying an extra $500 isn't a big deal, but when it gets to $1000 then people start to back up, and I am talking for most people?

A hard one to answer, it would depend on what I am getting for the bucks no matter if is $100 or a $1000. Value is more important that the actual amount, I must feel that I am getting my moneys worth. If dealer wants $500 for a winch and I can buy one for $300 guess who will be installing it. Slap

To me it is all about value…. I don’t care how much it costs, if I want it, I investigate and decide on the value to me. Then I decide if I want to spend that much.

Example, I like Polaris, BUT will I pay $1,000 extra just for ADC, no way in hell….

I have a single brake lever that controls all 4 wheels with the amount of braking/slip I want. Why would I pay $1k for something that I have to “blip” the throttle on a steep loose shale descent for?

Some folks may love all that EBS/ADC/4 wheel EBS/???? stuff but if it is steep enough for me to have to pay attention I also want to be in control.

So…. I consider value which is usually functionality for my riding style. And yes, some of that is the WOW factor… But that is usually paint, motor, sound, etc….. I don’t drag race GSXRs so I have no need for the fastest.

I agree with Ynot. Cost is not as important as perceived value. When we start getting over $10,000, I'd have to begin to consider a used Jeep over a quad. I know I can get one of these much cheaper than a Razor. Granted they aren't street legal, but for what I'd use a side by side for, this is far more practical.

in reading your example text; for me there's no price cap that would keep me from getting the next higher model or completely diff machine if thats what i was set on.
* not just 1 small feature would do it, but the overall package is what i'd chase.
in that already high price range, making that kind of investment/ commitment, i'd opt to go for what truely did it for me.
* my reality was looking at the renegade 800 or the sp 800 here locally. the rengade was right at 9 grand and none avail in my area here for the rest of the year, or the sp800 for 6400 with the alum rims and duals. i'm the proud owner of the sp8. no regrets....

Price ain't the driver for me; certainly not at the $ 1000 difference level . . .

Let's say I could get a Polaris for $ 9000, a Can-Am for $ 10,000, and a Thunder Cat for $ 11,000.

Of these, I'd buy the one I liked best, regardless of price.

If I bought a higher-priced ATV, I'd rationalize the RE-SALE value . . . "It's an INVESTMENT, honey!"

Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin

Buying a quad you're not totally satisfied with won't be compensated for by saving a thousand or two; leastwise, not in my book.

I agree with the above posts which say value is the deciding point. A few months ago I ended my search for a large quad when an area dealer was eliminating '06 Vinsons for $5399 OTD.

My answer to that is yes I would spend the extra money, well now I would anyhow.Back in March of 2006 when I was buying my 06 SP 500 HO I was also considering buying the 06 SP 500 X2 but didnt want to spend the extra money.A year and a half later I still kick myself for not spending the extra money on the SP 500 X2.Not to far in the future I will face that same question again when I step up to the SP 800,next time I will spend the extra money and get what I really want.Thats just my take on things.

I like to pick my own winch and tires so no XT upgrade for me. I look at quality and durability over price. Though both are usually close together... I like to stay in the 7's for a new FI utility. I also like to get 700-1000 off MSRP and my ag exemption. My last two bikes have worked that way 7250 for a camo Rinny and 7200 for a camo BF750. The Can Am is not the full package to me so it's price just puts the final nail in.. If they get much more expensive I won't enjoy tearing them up nearly as much...

EFI yes2thumbs If it's more $ for different color no way. More $ for something I can put on cheaper like a winch or tires/rims no. Wrenching on your bike is half the fun. 2thumbs

I buy EFI for the mountain trips. We have guys in the group that won't go just because of the cost or hassle of re-jetting. I do pay 1-200 more for camo, I like my camo more than bright red or puke green.

Knowing what I know now, I would have spent the extra money and gotten the 800 over my 500. My 06 500 sp has done everything that I have asked of it, but I find myself wanting more power, especially when I ride my buddies 800 Sp or my other buddies 800 renegade.
