Really wanted to get a plow on my new Polaris 500 but was skeptical about the price and how effective it really would be. Ended up with just a winch. Would welcome folks' honest opinion on whether you think a plow is worth the money. Yes, I live in Colorado where we do get our share of snow.

I had similiar thoughts 2 years ago when I bought my plow. However, after the snow last winter, I'm sold on what you can do. That first big snowstorm that hit Denver last year, well I was able to plow it all out of our driveway with my 48" plow. Granted I did plow Wednesday night and again Thursday, but it saved an enormous amount of shoveling. Plus since I bought mine used for only $100 in July of that year, I was estatic about plowing snow and have been ever since plowing the sidewalks and driveways of the neighbors too!

If you consider shoveling exercise, skip the plow.

I don't, so I purchased a plow. Like RB said, the neighbors usually appreciate your help on the sidewalks or in my case I plow a couple of the neighbors driveway for them.

WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU GREG? You pic has changed. Looks like you found a new helmet and gained a bit of weight? Nevermind. Looks like you made it back to yourself in short order.

GullyTrash, I have been contemplating the same thing. I have been 1/2 @$$ keping my eye open on Craigslist. I may wait till later in the spring when someone may be wanting to unload one.

I got busted by the person that owns that mug so I went to a different avatar. Took him less than 24 hours to notice I stole his likeness.

I have now owned two plows, 1 being a Blackline plow and the 2nd being the Cycle Country plow.

Both are 60 inch plows, I did not care for the Blackline plow as it was to heavy and slow to lift.

I really like the Cycle County plow, and my Grizz has zero problems pushing light snow or heavy wet snow.

After a bit of practice I have learned how to stack snow out of the way.

I have used my plow for pushing rocks, sand, black dirt and of course snow.

It has proven to be one of the best investments for us.

Feel free to check out my pics.

Good luck

GullyTrash16,
I see we don't live that far apart although your elevation is probably around 6,500 and mine is 8,600. You remember the heavy snows we got last year? That's when I bought my Polaris 500. Got the V-Shaped Razor snowplow. The dealer threw it in as part of the deal because I also bought the extended warranty. The plow is perfect for the driveway I have. Comes in on one street and exits on another. Shoveling by hand would take close to 2 hours and if I let it get beyond 6" deep then I just had to hire someone with a plow to do it. Save your health, buy a plow. If you're up in Woodland Park the next time we have a good snow (which could be the middle of this week), stop by and I'll let you try mine out. Anchors Aweigh!!

Thanks RJ, I just might give you a holler during the next dump. I just put in another driveway (75ft long) in addition to what I already had so I will probably take the plow dive eventually. Just wanted to know what others thought. BTW, In addition to the winch, was told all i need is a mounting kit and the blade. Is that right? So, SeaBee huh?...Always had a lot of respect for you guys (Land-lubber Navy who builds big stuff quickly). Navy's changed a lot since your days - retired in '05 after driving ships for the last half of career. Looking forward to meeting you and yours and getting some riding in. Cheers!

GullyTrash16; send me a PM anytime you want to head up this way to try out the plow. You "ship drivers" always did a great job of getting us and our equipment to where we needed to be, mostly in LST's and LSD's. Sometimes wished I had stayed in but at least the GI Bill got me to where I am today. I love the smell of jet fuel in the morning's !!!! I'm going to take a wild guess and bet you currently work at "Pete", if so, watch for a white and green Diamond Jet banking over Bldg 1 once or twice a week.

GullyTrash16; this truly is a small world. You may have met my wife, she is in and out of Bldg 2 frequently. She works for OPM/FISD. Would you be interested in a ride this weekend, weather permitting? Thinking of the area north of Hwy 24 either to the west or east of Wilkerson Pass. Lots of easy terrain on either side and they are connected by the LaSalle Pass road which might be more of a challenge. Off of LaSalle Pass road is another road that continues on up to the microwave towers on top of Badger Mountain. That overlooks the Wilkerson Pass rest area on Hwy 24 and a great view from up there. If you're interested I can do a post to see if anybody else would like to join us.

Sounds like that would be quite a hike. It's an hour for me to get to Woodland park from Falcon. How much further is the ride area from WP?

About another 30 minutes west on Hwy 24. We like to stop at Florissant for breakfast because there is plenty of parking along Hwy 24 for cars/trucks/trailers. We actually live just off of Hwy 67 less than 5 minutes from the Rainbow Falls and Painted Rocks area but since we've never ridden there I don't if the wife could handle it on her new machine. She's never had one before. What's your opinion, could she handle those trails?

30 mintues past WP is fine with me. Anything inside of a 2 hour drive and I am there for a day trip. Let's watch the weather and I'll let you make the call. Btw, the wife is not an ATV newbie. We used to ride 3-wheeler death machines out in the southern AZ desert when we were both younger. We are both new to trail riding is all. Only thing is that it would have to be Sunday cuz the wife works Saturdays until mid Feb (she has put in her notice). Let's pick this issue back up over in the Rock Hoppers board - think we got a little off the subject. Beer

ok you guys with the 48 inch plow, is that narrow enough for your standard subdivision sidewalk? I have an old plow that came with my Kawi, but have lost part of the parts, plus it was manual lift. The few times I used it, I had trouble with either catching the plow on the turf, or the quad slipping off the sidewalk sideways.

I've got the 48" Polaris plow and it works fine either angled or straight on the sidewalks in my neighborhood. However, these sidewalks are the ones that are right on the curb so there is only turf on one side too!

Bryan,
Welcome to the site neighbor. I'm fairly new myself. I'll be in and out of town until next weekend. After that I'll try and do a post and see who might be interested in a ride in that area.

I have heard the synthetic winch cable is better for plow use. For resisting damage to sharp bending and frequent use. Is that right?
