Hello all!

I am BRAND NEW to the sport, and have pirchased a quad, originally for ice fishing...but now I cannot WAIT to get up in the hgih country...

I noticed some recent posts with some fantastic looking skid plates...are these necesarry? I mean, I KNOW what they are desugned to DO...but is this something I should invest in before getting out there ont he 4x4 roads and the trails, or?

ALSO...ANY advice on equipemt needed/suggested would be GREATLY appreciated!

I am hoping to find some more "isolated" places I could run up to on the machine, and fish...I saw a post on here regarding Turqoise Lake up near Leadville...and tha'ts a favorite Springtime Lake Trout fishery! I plan on giving that a whirl!

Last thought in my "novel here...THANK YOU ALL for this great site! I really look forward to learning from, and perhaps meeting some of you someday.

I love the site!

THanks,

First off welcome to the site.

Besure and check into the ROCK HOPPERS many things going there often. Couple rides and you will learn much.

TURQUOISE LAKE is a good ride. Just head out HAGERMAN PASS. You'll have to trailer there several places to park and unload along the road.

On other side of town the MOSQUITO PASS is a good trail not real rough but scenic. At bottom of MOSQUITO you will see the OLD DIAMOND MINE. South you will see a trail; leading over the hil, a gillion mines to explore in that area.

Two things that are pretty important. Wear a helmet, also if possible don't ride alone. Watch the ROCK HOPPERS several rides posted quite often, you are welcome to tag along, great bunch of folks. They love to share their knowledge of trails and riding skills. WE were all right where you are right now so don't be bashful.

You have questions we have answers. I'm not familar with the KQ and skidplates they have maybe STUTZ will chime in him and ANNIE have new ones also.

Cob, Annie may correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the KQ comes with a plastic skid. My opinion is if you are going to high center a lot of objects(rocks, logs, etc.)you proberly need a skid. Maybe Glenlivet will chime in a while. He has a metal skid on his KQ.

Welcome to the forum. I'm pretty new here too. About the skid plates, I just ripped the stock plastic swingarm guard off my suzuki vinson this afternoon. I saw a rock in the trail I thought I could clear and next thing you know my daughter is picking up the plastic guard and handing it to me. I mention this because I thought I had enought clearance and I didn't. I don't think it takes much to damage the stock plastic protection and when you do, you are one step away from some real serious damage. (Frankly, I didn't even realize I had knocked it off-I could of done some big time damage under there.)
All this to say, the very next thing I do is to get the appropriate skid protection under my quad.

I am another newbee. I just got a Renegade 800 and I made the dealer put Ricochet aluminum skids on it before I even took delivery. The are heavy but they offer rock solid protection. Way more confident when I ride which makes it so much more fun to thrash it around a little.

The King Quad 700 has decent plastic skids from the factory. They'll let you skid over logs and some rock without danger of destroying goodies. Unless you plan on hardcore rockwork I wouldn't worry about upgrading your skidplates.
Have fun! Good ATV you have there.

I agree Glenlivet,

We immedately put Ricochet Skids on our KQ 700 since my brother in law was going to pound this machine on the rocks, and other rough terrain.

Most quads come with plastic skids, but if you are really going to get extreme with your machine, aftermarket skids are a must. I was never big on skid plates, but after running them on my Outlander 800 (which is a must), I loved the piece of mind you have with them. I will have them on our Grizz 700EFI.

If you don't plan to get nuts with your machine the plastic skids will be fine, but if you are going to get nuts, I would invest in them.

Also, for your new KQ 700, it is HIGHLY recommended you replace the stock air filter. Here is link for more info.

Air Filter Replacement

Here is a link to more info on the KQ 700, its basically a rock solid machine with very few problems, or crticism.

The King Quad skid plates are nearly identical to the Grizzly skid plates such as these.
