My son will be coming to TP after we are already there but I have no idea where we will be camping. Do cell phones work there?
Thanks

Depends on the provider, I know VERIZON don't.

I can 2nd that for Verizon, except high up as in top of Aspen, Antero, Pitkin at the General Plume. AT&T didn't either in 2007.

With Verizon I even updated my roaming coverage area before leaving Buena Vista with that number you dial 228 or 288 or something like that.

I know nothing of the folks that run the stores/cafe there at the Trading Post, but I would bet if you left directions to your campsite with the folks running either and then have your son ask where ever you leave them, he should manage to find your camp. I am thinking I would probably take an envelope to put the directions in just in case. Anyway, you can do this and then call him from a payphone of whatever to let him know what you left and where.

I know we have done this before in Pitkin and have not had any trouble getting new folks to the cabin.

Get some small wood stakes and staple paper plates with arrows on them and stake them along the road pointing the direction to camp, that's what we use. Or isn't there a pay phone at the trading post call him after you get camp set up???

Thanks guys. Thats a good ides about leaving directions at the trading post. I called them today and they said Cottonwood Pass is open, they have water to fill the RV and they have a pay phone, so we should be "good to go"
Anybody want to join us. Al's coming too Cob and another couple. About 6 ATVs and and 2 or 3 dirt bikes so far. It'd be nice to meet some more of you guys and see some others that I've already met.

We always take 2 way radios with a good range. Lewy does the same. We usaly camp in Union Park and can talk back and forth with Lewy and his gang when they are in ther cabins. I bought some with a 12 or 14 mile range, now I see you can get 17 mile ones for around $60-70. Just make darn sure that before you leave you both know EXACTLY what chanel to be on or there not gona work. I know I have heard people talking between Dinner Station campground and what ever the one clear up north buy Taylor Pass road are while I was at camp in Union Park and they could hear me and Lewy talking so they have a good range on them.

Anyone ever have success with coins using the pay phone at the Taylor Park Trading Post?

I think I tried calling collect without success. People said using the phone cards purchased at the Trading Post worked.

Shrug

My sister bought the phone cards and used them with the pay phone. Think I remember her saying they go fast.

I look at it this way, before I head west of Buena Vista I call and let family know I'll be out of reach till I get where there's service again. Besides I'm on vacation, I hate talking on the phone let alone answering the danged thing. I really only have it for emergency's never ever nearing my total minutes for the month.

Remember to mess with peoples heads there. Get your phone out, don't even turn the thing on. Just walk around and carry on a conversation for anybody that's in ear shot. Then watch Joe Public get there's out, and wonder why you have service and they don't. ROFL Who Me rol

OH GOOD ONE KENNY! ROFL

MAX I talked to AL other day about that. But that is to far for us to travel and not be able to ride any more than you can. Think we will pass on this one.

Cool. They shoulda put it on one of the many mountains surounding the resivor, but I supose running power up there would have been more work than it woulda been worth.

Isn't that road OHV take above the TP a runway for emergencies??? I could have sworn I seen an Ultra Light being assembled or taken apart on that road either last year or the 1 before. Me thinking tower as in what we have here would be an obstacle for planes to maneuver around.
