I am trying to figure out how to get my Garmin on the Sportsman. The left side of the bars doesn't have room left to mount anything. The right side is a possiblity but the wiring from the 4x4 selector will be in the way. It doesn't seem to have a whole lot of slack in it to move it out of the way.

How are you guys mounting your GPS? Is there a tank mounted option out there?

I made a mount for mine out of aluminum bar stock and a strip of metal. After a few years of not being able to see the screen while riding or in enough detail of the whole area I got a full size unit and carry a hand held for backup. This is the Lowrance Baja 540c.

I really didn't care for any of the handlebar mounts. I wanted something a little cleaner looking to mount my Garmin Zumo to my Sportsman. I used most of the RAM mount that came with the Zumo but I bought a standard RAM base component and modified it to fit dead center on the headlight pod. I love the location of it. Right in front of me and just above the stock speedo/dash.

Dave.....

Here's the RAM base I bought then modified. It's part # ramb202-24. About $20.00

And here's the end result....

The problem with having your GPS as the highest item on your ATV is that should you upright it, your GPS will be destroyed for sure. That's why I have mine mounted behind the bars and below them. Big Grin

would be a bummer to have a GPS trashed, but it seems to me if you turn over, you probably got bigger problems...

But why trash a GPS just because of where you mount it? I've seen a couple pictures of rollovers where the most expensive thing to replace was the GPS and most everything else was intact!

I know with progressive that if the GPS is mounted on the quad like above it is coverd by them. Wen I rolled te GPS cae out of he ount and survived where as mount took the brunt of crash. It was the middle arm that broke.

I used this ram mount for my GPSMAP 60CSx and mounted it on the left handlebar. Plenty of adjustability for either view whether mounted low or high. Looks to be just as easy to see when low and have better protection.

Same mount I have for mine and after RB made the suggestion, I rotated it down so that my GPS is low yet viewable. Just a small amount of insurance in case the machine goes for a frolic in the flowers.

Yea, I've heard that argument before. I have insurance that will cover the GPS in case of any accident. The GPS will surely be the least of my worries.

I actually think the way I have it mounted is a good Safety Feature. Wink If I ever start to do something stupid that maybe I shouldn't be I have that Zumo staring me right in the face reminding me of the potential risk. undecided

Having said that....

Rockbanger, I certainly can relate to your point of view. Believe me, I ran through the "What if I have an accident" scenario while deciding where to mount the GPS. It's just that, as it always is with me, I chose form & function over practicality. That's my nature. I've never owned a practical vehicle in my life and I'm somewhat proud of the fact. To each his own though. Smile

Hoping to meet up with some of you guys soon...

Dave....

ATV Cruiser, I really like that mount.

I'm not familiar with the Zumo, does that have trail or topo maps available? Record tracks to export to PC? I know I could look that stuff up, but would rather hear from someone with personal experience with it.

The other reason for not mounting the GPS on top of the pod is that is where my chest is located when climbing steep hills. So having it there would impede my shifting of weight towards the front when climbing our steep mountains and rocks. Big Grin

Hello Dave,

For whatever reason I've seen a lot of mis-information floating around on the capabilities of the Garmin Zumos. I have even heard people questioning if a Zumo can tell you where you are located with Lon/Lat coordinates. Now I ask, what good would any GPS be that can't tell you where you are at?? That one cracks me up. It may be due to Garmins poor documation or the fact that Garmin in some Marketing brainstorm/frenzy decided to change some longstanding GPS terminology.

Garmins new terminology:

1. When using a Zumo a Waypoint is now called a "Favorite". It's the exact same format as a Waypoint and when you transfer them to your PC they are still called Waypoints.

1. When using a Zumo a Track is now called a "Trip Log". It's the exact same format as a Track and when you transfer them to your PC they are still called Tracks.

Waypoints, Routes & Tracks can all be recorded and transferred to your PC or transferred from your PC. Any time the unit is turned on it automatically records tracks (Trip Logs).

You can load and display Street Maps, Topo Maps, Waterway Maps. I have a 4GB memory card loaded with several maps, City Maps & Topo/Trail Maps. I can switch between them at will.

You can, at any time, display and or save your current Latitude, Longitude & Altitude with timestamp. (Waypoint)

Nice, and it looks like the screen is even big enough for us old guys to see!

Gordon, then maybe you need to...no, not gonna go there, too mean. ROFL Being as it is on a ball mount, I assume you could just swivel it down towards the rack when you want to hang over the bars.

Dave - I hope we meet up on the trail sometime, I'd like to see your setup.
