I'd like to have an X2 but can't consider it at this time. I have an 2004.5 500 HO and really like it but need info on riding two-up.

I was looking at pictures of an ATV with a rear passenger seat. The pictures were on this forum on this page: http://atvquadsquad.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/9466018454/m/3521050264/p/2
The one I was looking at is about 1/3 down the page -- pictures by "Sportsman500HO"

I'm in the market for a rear passenger seat and wanted to know how any of you (that have one) like your's and what brands they are? I am particularly interested in the brand of the one pictured by "Sportsman500HO"

They always say not to ride two on an ATV built for one but there are so many passenger seats out there -- I wonder if any of you have had any problems riding two-up. I would assume the center of gravity would be changed towards the rear and a person would have to be careful going up hills.

I don't take chances or ride fast -- I'm am 61 years old and am planning on taking my adult son on a ride. I'd like to know if any of you have any advice for me on riding two-up and what to look for in a rear seat.

Thanks in advance for any information.

I got one for my 06 700 and it is made by QuadBoss... it works great and very comfortable... I drilled a hole in the bottom of it on each side and use the lock and ride connectors to fasten it to the back rack....easy on easy off....

I went to the QuadBoss page and I see 3 rear seats. The three are called: Rear Rest Trunk, Duo Rear Luggage and Rear Cargo Box. Which one do you have -- or do you have pictures?

How do passengers like the seat you have?

I have a seat box on my KQ450.

Pics can be seen here

I bought it from my dealer and I'm unsure how widely available they are. Anyway, mine is really comfortable. Great for two-up on easy trails; I wouldn't do anything too wild, not for the fact that it doesn't have the longer wheelbase like the true two-up machines, but because the passenger has nothing to hold themselves up when going down hill (no footpegs to push themselves back).

The bottom cushion lifts up so you can access the seat on the ATV to take it off. Not sure if most seat boxes are like that. Also look for one that has handles on the side to give your passenger something to hold on to.

Be VERY, VERY careful! A couple of years ago, in Arizona, I watched a quad overturn while being rode double. It was not a machine designed for two-up riding, and had a quality passenger seat. I was descending a semi-bad grade, and met several quads, most of which were being rode double. I pulled to the side to allow them to pass, and when the lead quad was 25 yards or so from me, it went up and over so fast, there was no time to react. The machine rolled over both people, and came to rest against a rock. Fortunatly, after quite awhile, and after getting the quad back up on the road, straighting out the bars the best I could, it was possible to get the quad running. The operator was able to mount up, and continue, his passenger, AND all the other passengers wisely walked the quarter-mile to the summit. This incident was the innocent result of one mistake. The party had traveled a considerable distance over easy trails, then encountered only about 100 yards of quite technical riding. The passengers did not dismount, and frankly the danger did not present itself until it was to late.

So, like said---please be very careful. These riders got lucky that no one was more serously injured.

Crockett,
If you go all the way to the bottom of that page you'll see my quad with the Kimpex box on it. Kimpex This one is real similar to the one I have, found it on ebay for a lot less, just type in atv luggage. You can put a little gas can on the rear but I usually put my cooler there. With my 5 year old on the back there's no difference but when I take my wife I have her get off if I have to do anything too techincal. The front end just gets too 'light' and it's just not worth the risk. Good luck.

Have any of you had any problems attaching your rear seat to your rack?

Mine will attach either by strapping it down with the straps that are on the box, or with the provided hardware. The straps make it easy to take off, but I prefer drilling holes in it and bolting it down on the racks. Makes it much more solid.

agree
Mine is bolted down as well and it's not going anywhere. Thought about getting the Lock n Ride anchors for it so I could pop it off if I wanted.

Well... You could just drill four 1/4" holes in the plastic box, lined up with the rack holes and put short 1/4" bolts through just the box itself and tighten the nuts right up, with the nuts on the outside of the box and maybe 1/2" of bolt sticking through the nuts.

Then to mount the box, put the box on the bike rack by putting the protruding bolts through the rack holes and then tie the box down with the supplied straps.
Now the box won't scuffle around on the rack and wear it out or wear the paint off, because it's located firmly in place by those bolts, but you can take the box off in a jiffy by just taking the straps off and lifting it off.

After looking at this post again, I'm going to change my statement from asking all who are considering doing this modification from "please think about it," to "WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE????" Machines not designed for two up riding are just that, NOT DESIGNED FOR TWO UP RIDING!! In other words the center of mass is behind the rear axle, making it very dangerous. The incident I witnessed in no way could be blamed on operator recklessness, or anything other then not knowing the danger was present. The party had already covered almost fifty miles of tails without incident, and had no way of knowing that a hundred yards of disaster awaited them. Bear in mind while you may be cautious, careful, etc. etc. someone else might not be.
There are many examples of neglect, and situaitions that at the very least make this practice dangerous. I know that most of us wouldn't take uneeded chances, some wear helmets, and get upset of others don't have the commen sense to do likewise, so please, heed what I say--if for no other reason other then for the safety of your five year olds, or wives. The ONLY two-up riding I do is with my cow-dog, and she rides IN FRONT OF ME!
