I'm switching from K&N to Unifilter and wanted to know those of you that have foam filters which oil provides the best protection and which cleaner does the best job of removing dirt and oil? Also I see there are aerosol spray oils and your typical bottles of oil, which do you prefer to use? Thanks!

As far as cleaner, well nothing beats just plain old gasoline. Some say it weakens the epoxy glue that seals the ends and flange, but I have never noticed any problem, then again I use just enough to clean the filter.
As far as oil, I like the aerosol spray cans myself. They are quicker and easier. Choice of oil is up to you. I am not particular to any brand.
Dont forget to get some cheap latex gloves as it is a messy process.

agree
Also has anyone tried diesel fuel to clean elements? I have used it to soak parts to loosen corrosion but not filters and dirt.

As far as oil, after I have let the filter element completely dry (let all the gas evaporate completely) I just soak it in 2 stroke oil and squeeze the crap out of it in all directions to distribute it evenly then wrap the messy filter element in a clean rag and twist it all up until the excess oil is squeezed out to the rag. My filters are frairly thinly coated when I am done and have had no problems with them except when I don't clean them. Then they are just dirty.

If you have any skin sensitivities at all, no matter how minor, make sure you use latex gloves when working with gas as it will dry your skin out like crazy and even cause major skin irritations that feel like burning. I use plenty of aloe gel or good boot grease (bees wax and pine tar) on my hands after I get done working with gas just to keep it from cracking skin too bad in the dry cold winter.

No Toil filter oil and cleaner to me is the easiest I know of to use. You put about a capful of the cleaner in warm water in the kitchen sink and let the filter soak a few minutes and it is clean. The No toil oil is biodegradable so it goes down the sink. You don't have to mess with gas or harsh cleaners to clean it. I will never go back to anything else. Just a lot easier and not near as messy.
