I will be riding this weekend with family and may need to take some extra gas along with me on our ride. I do not have any of the special bags or tanks to place gas in. Is it safe to ride on the trail with a 1 gallon container bungee strapped to my racks. I do not ride like an idiot, but I also do not ride like I am 100 years old. We keep a pretty good pace and jump some of the bumps stop from time to time. I don't want to run out of gas and thought of this or to maybe carry a couple bottles of STP gas treatment or something along those lines. What are your thoughts?

I have one of those fancy 4 gallon Koplin flat packs and it leaks gas no different than the small one gallon cans that I carry just in case when I don't ride with my boys on their four wheelers. Best thing to do is put a little grease on the threads of them plastic cans and tighten them down real tight. Then secure them good with bungies and make sure if they leak that they don't get on you or your clothes!

yeah..it is Ok to carry the extra gas...I also have a Kolpin Flat Fuel Tank...

Make sure you strap it down on the opposite side from the exhaust ...just in case it leaks.. the exhaust could get hot enough or throw a spark to ignite.... Bomb

Just out of curiosity, have you guys tried teflon tape (white plumbing tape) on your gas cans ? Buddy and I were discussing that one last night. Haven't had the chance to try it out yet.

Not sure JD...It probably would work... test it out by putting the teflon tape in a a glass and pour gas into it....

While Kenny and I have Kolpin flat-packs (4-gallon +2 1-gallon), I've seen HUNDREDS of riders with red plastic !-gallon, 4-ounces containers lashed every which way on every type of ATV imaginable, and . . . know of no tragic consequences.

Use lots of bungee cords and common sense; don't see a problem in carrying auxiliary gas in plastic "Blitz" cans . . .

I recently rode 200 miles on the Pauite Trail with 2 gas cans bunjeed to the rear rack and had no problems. A little gas seeped out, but not enough to cause a problem.

Thanks guys!

Any thoughts on the small bottles of gas treatment?

I sort of like this idea because they come sealed and I could place them in the storage compartment!

My thought would be to add a few bottles once I have been out on the trail and come to an area where I can dispose of them in a trash can. That way it is mixing with the gas already in the tank, but I have added another 1/4 gallon or so of fuel to the tank.

Keep in mind that I do not think I will be needing that much additional gas, just enough to keep my worry level down to a miniumum

What do you think?

Just think the cost for the reward is minimal with the gas treatment as compared to the cheap cost of fuel! ROFL

I wouldn't be worried about carrying a gas can strapped to your rack.

The flat packs either 1.5 gal. or the 4 gal. provide a comfort level of not having to worry about running out of gas. The $40 to $70 is worth it.

I use the Kolpin flat packs most of the
time I run with just one, If I'm on a
ride thats over 100 miles I'll strap on
the other one and I use straps to hold them
down Wink

I have a couple of Kolpins here, and another long flat pack on the front rack for those longer rides.
There are subframes I made that go behind the fender and support the packs, They're not just on the plastic! Wink That wouldn't last long. Eek

Those look good mounted there Glen.

I carry a gallon to get me back tothe truck if I end up on long rides with the likes of the guys around here. I can get about 45 miles on a tank load. My 400 2-stroke isn't exactly the most fuel efficient on the trail, but hey, the 2 stroke is fun and there is little chance of me spending more on gas than I saved with the price I got it for.

This is how I carry mine. Kopln in the front and 2, 1 gallon cans in the rear box.

Got to watch out on the new 4 gallon koplin packs they do not seal at all with the pour spout in side the pack so I remove the nozzle and place it in the box as well and then the thing sems to seal well.

When I bought my kpolin I was told the 4 gallon packs were very hard tokeep from leaking, koplin knows the situation and they told me in an email they were making replacement caps for the 4 gallon packs but I have yet to see it.

When I brought it home the first thing I did was fill it up with water put the cap back on and went on to shake the crap out of it and it did leak like a shiv. I tired the thread tape it did not work. I tired greasing the threads with some silicone and it did not work. I then just took out the nozzle and it worked fine.

I built some racks for our Polaris quads. we have rack extensions and the carriers bolt to them and a bracket I made. We can carry two of the 2 gallon cans on each quad.I made them out of aluminum stock from Lowe's. I also made a cooler rack for my quad tha fits between the two gas can racks.

I think they turned out pretty nice.
