I was set to buy a Polaris lock n ride rear box but read on another forum that the lock n ride mounting system wasn't all that secure when full of gear and the box would sometime rattle and move around on the rear rack. Looking for a cargo box that I can carry things needed for a long days ride. I really don't want a wrap around box. I like the one Montana Jack use to carry (deluxe dry cargo box) but is no longer available. Can anyone tell me how the construction of the Kopland compares with the Polaris lock n ride? Is one made better then the other? Is one more water resistant if you get caught in the rain?

I got a '07 500 sportsman efi w/cargo box. I bolted it in 4 places to the rack--it don't move at all no matter how much weight is in it.

Nibroc: Which box did you buy? Are you happy with that model? Is there a decent gasket around the top to keep out water?

I just bought a box at WalMart for $45.00. It is a Rubbermaid. About 35" wide, has a tray inside. Bolted up good to my new KQ 450 rack. It doesn't look as stylish as some but is really rigid. Has some good latches and hinges. I had ordered a Kolpin rear cargo box for it but was really disappointed. It was bad flemsey, when the lid open backwards, the back of the box gave to the inside. I sent it back for refund. Just a thought. Good luck!

Oh, I forgot to say, if you want the Rubbermaid, it's in the automotive section with some other storage/cargo type boxes.

Thanks for the input etexgrizzly. I read on another board that the koplin was not too sturdy. I looked in Wally World last night. The only rubbermaid box this particular store had was about 18 inches wide. I'll check some other WM stores. WM had a slime compressor with small bottle of slime for $20. This is not the ultra-small compressor but I may pick one up. I have time to choose a box as it's too cold to ride much now. I'll keep asking questions as I only want to buy one "good" box before I ride Hatfield & McCoy in May or June.

Nobody owns a Polaris lock n Ride box that can comment on how rigid the box is, how secure the lock n ride mounting system is, and how good the seal around the top is to keep out water and trail dust?

Hey, see your still looking into the box thing. I saw something today at a sporting goods store (in TX) that may interest you. In the luggage section, they have some trunks and boxes that would work. The brand name of the box is CONTICO. This box had a built in locking latch that could be nice. It was really rigid. FYI!

etexgrizzly: The Contico work tuff tool storage box looks ideal. It is the right size, says it's water resistant, and the price is about $60 from Amazon. I emailed another rider who had the lock n ride. He said the mounting system on his box tore loose from the box and he ended up having to drill and bolt it to his rack. When you pay $180 for a lock n ride you would think it would be made better. He also said the lock n ride didn't hold as much equipment as some of the other barnds.

I have the locknride box and can say that it is plenty sturdy for all my needs. I have even filled the walls with expanding foam and use it for a cooler as well as tools.

I have the Lock & Ride box with back rest and side bags, It has only once moved and that was because the bolt in the rubber mount was loose.

The only things I don't like is that you can sort of lock it with locks but you can not lock it to the quad with out modifying it.

Also it is a double wall box, which I think takes up space on the inside and is a waste of space.

Blacksheep. If you tighten the lock-n-ride bolts up then flip the latch it holds VERY well.

The latch has a hole in it for a lock.

I use the long hasp locks from Wally World, they come in a 3-pack. I'm not saying it wont come off but nobody it just going to drive by and just yank it off, they are going to have to work. You could also add security bolts to be more secure.

Yes they are double wall but compared to earlier POLARIS boxes and many others that you will find they are very well made. I will trade the little bit of room I lost for the quality. Never once did I have an issue with it rattling or moving around. I banged it off several trees at RAMPART and it took two maybe three rolls before coming off the quad and rest of the rolls (5-6 more) the quad made. I now have it mounted to the 2002 700 and looks almost like new. If I could use one I'd have another on the new machine, but they won't fit the TOURING MODEL.

If you go to a soft side, check out the tamarac;s that use magnets and velcro to seal the flaps, forget the Koplin, the zipper might last a year, then you throw it away and start over. Cabman uses a Tamarac, and it's a very nice bag.

I like the smaller hard sides, got mine from Cabellas. Seals great and never gets in the way. But sounds like you want something bigger. The Polaris lock and rides are big, but I've seen several knocked off in the woods. I think you have to bolt them on, then they'll probably get in the way if you ride any tight trails. I guess it's handy that you can unlock and remove them to get by tight spots if needed. Or sleep in them if you forget your tent... goodnight

I have the Polaris Lock - and - Ride with the side bags. The side bags have a weather flap with zippers underneath for a very good weather tight system, and the are water proof. They also have a seperate zip puch inside for stuff like wallet and keys.I keep my cell phone and a lot of other stuff that needs extra protection in the bags. Love it. Not quite as big as the Kimpex I had on my BF but the side bags help with the differance in size. I have hooked it on trees several times and never had it move. In fact if you tighten the nut it makes the rubber grommet expand farther for a very secure fit. I have to actually pry my box off when removing it. I really like the fact that you can remove it in just seconds. Seals good and as YnotAZ said you can get locks for it. With the locks it would be more secure theft wise then a box that is just bolted on.You can also get the Lock - and - Ride box with the extra cargo racks on the lid. It is a very good product.
