Some of us south Texans are making plan to go to Utah and do the Paiute Trail system the first weekend in July. What i'm looking for is some inside info on the trail system. We're planning on staying in motels/hotels on the trail system. we'll be there for 7 days, well 5 days on the trail the rest is travel time. so if you guys got any inside info on this, it sure would help in our planning

Thanks
Chico

The best info I can give you is to make your reservations early if you are staying in a motel or an RV Park. We stay in Marysvale and ride out from there. Liz and Charlies is the RV Park we stay in.

I understand the rooms are reasonable at Big Rock Candy Mountain that is within three miles of Marysvale.

I would also suggest you order the map of the trails. We are going in August and sent for the new map. It is a nice one. Here is a link. Paiute Trails

Have a great trip!

You can cover a whole lot of the Paiute trails from a central location like Big Rock Candy Mountain. You might want to trailer to some areas so you are not back tracking over the same trails to get back to Big Rock. It depends on how far you want to ride in a day. Be sure to take a flat gas pack.

You might want to trailer to Circleville to cover the Fremont trail and that area. There is a Motel and restaurant there with a great ham steak breakfast, Butch Cassidy Inn. Check the map out carefully as it should say the difficulty level of the trails and maybe the distance in miles. I know 01 trail out of Circleville is not a trail I would want to come down again. Most go up it, rather than down. Best to tackle it early in the day when you are not tired since it is very steep, about a 1500 ft. climb in 1/2 to 3/4 mile, rutted with switchbacks. Most women are not fond of this trail! Big Grin The vast majority of the trails are not difficult.

We have not been to the Paiute in three years so I am speaking from memory. I don't know what, if any, changes have been made. You will find the people very friendly and very helpful and your map will tell you a lot.

You will love the Paiute Trails with their awesome scenery and different terrains. Be prepared for dust in July. I just cover my nose with a 98 cent bandanna from WalMart and look like a bandit. Smile

There is also a book about the trails that is good. We have one but it is probably five years old. I think the book is worth ordering.

Be prepared for dust and heat. It does get very hot in July. Carry some spare gas but you don't have to carry alot cause you can ride into the towns for food and fuel. The best site to ask about Utah is ATVUTAH.com. You will get all the answers you want there. Most people there will even get you GPS coordinates or the will even share track logs with you. Not saying anything bad about this site the other site is run by people who live and ride there.

Chico, I have watched this post most of the day and it is frustrating the place where I work has the firewall so tight I can't even post from there - all I can do is read. Bash

Annie, for what it is worth, Liz and Charlies has been sold and is now run by someone else. They use the trailer park to rent their atvs. I would check before staying there now. They sent us a brochure and the wife and I got sticker shock at the rates.

It doesn't matter much where you stay, you can usually get on the trail from almost any of the locations. Annie is right though, some places you might stay at will cause you to do some sections of the trail multiple times just to get to the main trail.

Just South of the BRC Mtn is a town called Hoovers. Go west through the town across the highway and past the rest area. Continue west and you will be on what I think is one of the nicest trails there is. It will lead you to the main piaute trail. Check out atvutah.com and you can find a full description on most of the trails.

I think the trail you are talking about is Deer Creek Trail #74 and you are right it is a very nice trail.

One of our favorite trails is Cottonwood Creek #77. Heck, I am getting anxious just talking about the trails, can't wait to go.

I also got a brochure from Liz and Charlies but we had already made reservations at Big Rock Candy Mountain RV park. Hubby made the reservation and I think it is $20.00 a night. Being from California it is a bargain for us. Some of the RV parks here in California are nearly as much as a motel room! Roll Eyes so we "boondock" a lot.

chico, its too bad you're going in July, I plan on going up in June, but can alter my trip possibly...

I plan on heading up to Utah to ride a couple of days, then meet a couple of riders from Washington and ride in Montana, then heading east to my mothers house in Wisconsin, ride some there then head south and working on those details yet....

i'll see what i can do

I stayed at Lizz and Charlies in Sept and it was fine. I payed 35 a night for just the basic cabin with a bed, small refrigirator, microwave and a futon. It was very clean. Cleaner than alot of motels I have stayed in. They don't have showers in them but they have a very clean bathhouse with laundry facilities. I went to ride anyway not spend time in a high dollar cabin. Would do it the same way tomorrow. It is trail 74 that is across from Hoovers. You can access 74,Big Rock Candy Mountain from Hoovers and ride in many directions from there. Big Rock Candy Mountain has some good food there also. To me the best time of the year to go is late sept or early oct. The colors are awesome and the chance of snow is greater. We rode 550 miles in 5 1/2 days in September and saw some awesome scenery and we even go snowed on.

You know, it doesn't really matter where you stay if you can ride to the Piaute trail you will be riding some of the best riding you will ever experience. Just enjoy it.

ok guys, looks like i got a plan coming togather here. i've been to the ATVUTAH site. thats where i'm getting some of my info from...well probly alot of my info. but also looking and reading other info on the trail system. looking real hard at Rock Candy right now. they have those miner tents that look just right for our group. kind of like camping but not camping, and the price is right. please keep the trail recommendation coming, i'm making notes on them all. if we have to back track thats ok, trails look diffrent when you go back a diffrent direction on them. im sure sept. and oct are good times to go, just can't wait that long. as for the heat it can't be any hotter there than down here in south texas.

hey elkbow, it would be cool to hook-up with you. we were looking at going in june, but the reason we end up with july was cause of the 4th. one less day of vacation to use and had heard that the snow in the upper elevation might be melted enough to get thru by then. this is our plan as of now, leave the 30 of june in the a.m.. drive straight thru to utah, about a 24 hour run. a couple of hours to recover from that, then on the trails by monday a.m.. so we're looking at 5 days on the trails then head home the following weekend. thats the big picture so far. we just have to work out the little stuff like eating and sleeping...haha

elkbow~ just for your general information Big Rock has an RV Park across the road from the main lodge. $20.00 a night for full hookups but they might have other accomodations to park without hookups, don't know for sure.

chico~ don't you just love it when a plan starts to come together. I am sure you will enjoy the trails. Glad you liked the pics.

the only thing that keeps me hafe way sane is we're going to the MUD NATL in jacksonville this year for the first time also. thats only 40 days till that ride. but the Paiute ride is the one i really want to do, to play in a mud hole for a few days is nice. but to ride ALL day on trials with the kind of scenery thats there.....i can already see that 5 days ain't going to be enough...haha
