Hi
I am planning to visit Colorado in September and would appreciate recommendations what would be a nice route from Denver to Moab by 4x4 SUV.
Interests: high peaks, nice nature sites, old western towns.
thanks in advance
werner

I am just north of DENVER, get ahold of me and I'll come meet you in DENVER.

You will want to not miss CENTRAL CITY, RED ROCKS are a good site (just look at) is located at west edge of DENVER at edge of FOOTHILLS. I like the BRECKENRIDGE area. To me the RED CONEarea is a great place very scenic and a good chance to see wildlife.

LEADVILLE is a great old MINING area with alot of HISTORY connected to it. Idaho Springs/GEORGE TOWN right on the I 70 are both old mineing towns that are worth a visit. At VALE PASS rest stop, you can take SHRINE PASS across to RED CLIFF then back on HWY. I would make a trip to MARBLE for the MARBLE MINE that is an awesome site for sure.

Cob,
What do you think of the possiblity of snow at elevation at those dates? I know it is a little early, but still come prepared.

Hi Cob and Shawn
thanks for the links. indeed, what a beautiful country Colorado is. So many things to see. 1975 I went thru Colorado with a greyhound bus, but haven´t seen much from the country. After that I have been several times to the western states, but never made it back to Colorado.
I made a drawing with a route which I think will cover most of the goodies.
Cob, in case we meet, you can give me some more hints about places to visit. And of course renting an ATV for a tour.
I want to see also an old Western Fort to bring my thoughts back to this time. have seen only Jim Bridger Fort in Wyoming.
Shawn, good you mentioned Snow. we´ll take along warm cloths and listen to the weather news. I am looking forward so much.

You have a good route set out. That will take in several places that I mentioned. See where GREELEY is just to east of I25 just under it is JOHNSTOWN that is where I am at. We will make sure that one way or another you get a ATV trip.

Hi Cob
I still remember from previous discussions that you are living in Greeley and I found it on the map. Also got Johnstown on the map. seems like a little village just like I am living here in the bavarian forest. I´s really amazing what one can see nowadays with google earth. Cob, I could even see your ATV in the Garden. Smile

The return route is still open and I will discuss with my friend, also an old farth.
maybe south into New Mexico, Taos, Santa Fe and Sand Dunes in Colorado.

Here a foto from todays trip.

Lehencountry...Glad you are able to visit Colorado and share in this beautiful place in which we live...Something to think about while you are touring....Although retired, I work in a small gas station here in the Wet Mountains. Over the years, I have seen many tourists all with the same problem. Like you they rent an SUV to enjoy the mountains. The problem is, the rental companies put on the cheapest 4-ply tires they can find, then people take them off-road on roads and trails where 6-ply and even 8-ply tires are the norm. Bang! Flat tire and in many cases, ruined. Not trying to scare you, but please be aware of the tires on your vehicle and be extremely cautious when traveling on some of our dirt, gravel, rocky roads. Wouldn't want to see your trip spoiled or delayed...And I would ensure the rental company gives you a good phone number that can give you help 24/7. I have seen people who spend hours trying to get the OK to have a tire replaced or even road service for a breakdown....
