Well I finally found a dealer with one gassed up and ready to ride. First thing when I showed up he offered me a ride. That is all it took. The front suspension is very stiff. I am going to ride it this weekend and see how it wears in. I don't like the engine braking in reverse. It caught me by surprise when unloading it from the truck. It almost wheelie'd down the ramp. It has that snap I was wanting..

"EDITED TEXT," TXCamo? Don't grasp the meaning in this context; maybe local dialect, but I was bred in Texas myself. Probably a "generational" thing, like 'most everything else!

Now, do you mean engine "braking," as in deceleration, or "breaking," as in accelerating, "breaking out into a gallop?"

If the latter, seems like my Kawi V-twins had reverse over-ride buttons, and a reverse limiter to prevent you from being thrown over the handlebars if you accidentally hit the throttle while in reverse.

Had an ignition timing module on mine, greatly improving acceleration; may not be useful or desirable with the new machines.

Best luck with your new quad; unlike ATV magazine, I LIKE the "differential control lever," the front-locking control, because it's instantly "ON" or "OFF," always under the rider's control, at any speed, in any direction, in any range.

And, the tranny whine will become MUSIC to your ears!

My brother and I went to Muenster Saturday and I got 17 miles of trails on it. It almost caught fire at 8 miles. I was smelling burnt rubber smell but I assumed it was belt or new engine break in smell... Then it got real strong and smoke was pouring out from the seat and air box. I said oh DARN I am on fire! I hauled nuts to the closest creek and dunked the machine, parked it and puled the seat ready to start shoveling water on it. Everyone needs to check their winch loom routing. The factory loom for winch wires was melting and burning on the front header pipe on my bike. I cut it out of the way and went on about my ride.
Another thing I noticed that the EBC kind of humps going down hills.
Loading it in the truck was a little tricky because it was like the shiv would adjust half way up the ramp and accelerate me. It does eat fuel. My brother rode the KQ450 and barely cracked full tank marker. I was 2-3 bars down in 17 miles..
The stock tires are crap I was blowing them off all the time. I may try 26 inch Bighorns...
The machine has stalled twice both times was a cold start, riding a block and coming to a stop, then dead. One time it took 30 seconds to re fire, the other was 5-6 seconds to fire.
I know why guys eat belts on these bikes. It is so fun to just go around romping and hopping the front end.
The rear brake sucks the big one. My Rincon rear hydraulic brake will lock up if needed and is crisp. This Kawi wet brake does not stop this machine! It barely holds it parked. I know it is adjustable. There must not be enough leverage on it.. I give the rear brake a 2.
The front diff control is also sad. I got stuck on a litte step up with three wheels turning. I grabbed the diff control and still three wheels spinning. My Rinny with the locker would have climbed right up.
Comfort and handling were very good. I let Bro ride for a while and getting back on the KQ was laughable, what a crap wagon, lol! I could really tell it was twitchy, had less engine braking, no power etc..

EDIT: Read the rules, no profanity. Choose another word.

I carry no brief for Kawasaki, but in my experience, with stock tires on Prairie 650 and 700, I had zero/zilch/nada problems with belts or transmissions, and--the front locker never left me spinning three tires helplesly in the quicksand of the Limberlost swamp . . . YMMV ("Your Mileage May Vary").

While ATV Magazine has the '08 Brute, "Boss, Number One, And Still Climbing On The Charts!", I think the distinction is very fine between the top spot and second, third, fourth, on down to nth place, by any objective criteria.

--------------------

Boring (but true!) anecdote follows:

An oil company ran a small refinery near my Ark-La-Tex home town, in the "oil patch."

Company cars were issued employees; Ford, Chevy, or Plymouth, depending upon the successful competitive-bid contractor of the time.

Service life, durability and reliability varied. Some drivers would "pick to pieces" their vehicles; finding all sorts of discrepancies, and . . . at times, suffering severe maintenance and operational problems.

Finally, someone in the front office decided, "Hey, by competing these contracts, we're only saving maybe
$ 20 a car. Why not let the EMPLOYEES pick whatever brand they want to drive (from the Ford, Chevy, and Plymouth counterparts)?

Well, a system of rider-selected automobiles was put into place.

What happened? Fuel mileage improved, mean-time-between-failure improved, tire mileage improved, service calls and work orders decreased . . . all with the SAME drivers, with the SAME routes and assignments of the single-brand cars . . .

Don't know why this anecdote came to mind . . .

Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin

But a good one HUMAN NATURE Shrug

With the choices of machines that we have today can anyone really say any one of them is the best? What was number 1 a while back is now back in the pile some where an "also ran", what is #1 today will be in the middle of the pack pretty soon. I know what machine is #1 to me, that is what counts to me my own rateing not some other YAHOO that don't have a clue as to what is most important to me or what it takes to make a machine #1 in MY SHOOTOUT.

What is in the RAGS has no bearings on what machine I buy, I think about the only thing you may get out of them. Is that you might see some thing they mention that will cause you to watch closer for that certain thing. Other than that they are worth nothing, they mean little and are just someone else thoughts that aren't near as important as mine. I am very capable of riding a machine and posting my thoughts about it, duz that make it gospil and mean that others will take my word as the opinion of all opinions, or that I am an EXPERT?

Take them shootouts for what they are. Just a bunch of YAHOOS that love to ride like the rest of us, that happen to be in the right place at the right time with the right friends that got invited to test ride. Then get their thoughts posted in a magazine, you can do the same here. Experts that know any more than many of you I hardly doubt it. Shrug

Congrats on the new machine.

Hope it works out well for you and provides you with what you were wanting out of a quad.

I ride with Two Kawi's one of them being a Brute and it sure does seem to have the power and quickness.

Again Congrats and best of luck.

I just finshied my 500 mile review on this machine, and it addresses everything you mention. I would post it here, but its two pages long, and to much to rehash.

Some of the stuff you described is true, and some things can be corrected/adjusted, and some things are just the way it is.

Wow, you certainly addressed all aspects of "Brutedom," LaMigra!

Congratulations on a most comprehensive test and evaluation of the '08 Brute in your excellent ATV cybermagazine.

Earlier, I recommended a factory Service Manual to TX Camo. Now, I'd recommend a subscription to Jacobs ATV Magazine as an EQUALLY valuable complement. (You certainly address all of TX Camo's legitimate issues and concerns.)

Not only is your Brute coverage interesting and entertaining, but the "E-zine" contains valuable "how-to" info, far beyond the plausible scope of any shop manual. (For example, detailed, illustrated instructions on what to do in the field if one finds oneself in "Limp" mode, transmission-wise.)

While my only "Brutish" exposure was a test of the first model year at Hatfield-McCoy Trails, I've extensive Prairie 650 and 700 experience, from their introduction. With that background, your '08 Brute coverage resonates completely with my experience.

Critical as I am, even I can't even pick a nit with the content in your coverage!

Hmmmmmmm. Think I just saw a camo model on the floor down at the dealership . . . Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin
