I ordered some Elka Sport/Racing series shocks. According to Elka, they now run piggyback shocks on all 4 corners, whereas they used to run remote rezzies on the rear.

My question is, I don't see how the piggyback rezzies on the rear on the exhaust side. I'm emailing back and forth with one of the people at Elka and he said that they switched to all Piggybacks on the Brute in Oct 07, this year. Even though their website says their shocks only fit the 05/06 Brute 750, I know that the eye-to-eye length is the same and Elka verified that they would fit all years.

So last night I sent him pics of the stock shock in reference to the muffler. I looked at previous years, same thing, yet they say that piggybacks will fit.

What I wanted to know, anyone running piggybacks on the rear. Also, have you seen where the piggybacks were facing another direction than facing straight out to the side, i.e. towards the front, back or center of the machine?

The piggyback looks like it would almost fit, but looks like it would hit the shield on the muffler.

one of the guys on HL posted a pic for me, they mount the piggyback rezzie towards the rear on the rear shocks, so that will have plenty of clearance, probably will even be able to leave my storage cannister on the right rear...

I saw those ELKAs you ordered over on another Forum, I hope they do what you are needing them to do w/your Nice '08Brute.
For my Riding needs, just the basic system I am using is a 100% improvement over the Stock Shocks but w/yours and the extra fine tuning you can do, they should be super..

nope, still waiting, i called Elka a week ago Monday, said they were in production, whatever that means, then this week on monday i sent a message to the place i ordered them from, he said shipping can be screwy from canada sometimes, he would call them on tuesday and check with them, but never heard back from him, also sent an email to the guy i was talking with at elka, he didn't answer easy, would have been nice to have them for this long weekend, but its cold out there....lol....so probably next week before i see them...

May even have some fresh snow to ride in by next weekend in the Jemez, as they are calling for another storm (long range forecast).

So what is the field report? I think the stocker is a little firm. What is the adjustment range? I had some Elka's on a race bike but that was with plus 4 arms etc... I would like a set like my QA1's for road racing. I can go from Caddillac soft to Saleen harsh in twelve clicks of the knob.

the elka's are awesome...the ride is whatever you get them built for, since you have to give them rider weight, riding style, what you are using them for, etc....

mine are setup basically as a race setup, cause thats how i ride, they still ride way better than stock, no diving, suck up bumps and I have preload, rebound and compression adjustments, so i can soften them if i want, and make them do about anything....

there is way more than 12 clicks on teh elka's, there is something like 35 i believe, don't remember, its in the manual, you can look on elka's site, thats for both rebound and compression...

on the brute stock shock, i believe the problem is in the valving of the shock on the front, i think the spring is too soft and the compression valving is too stiff, thats why they feel hard on the front, will bump steer and dive in corners...

I have dealt with the Canadian's a time or two. I had two sets of triple rates on sport quads and had them reworked twice. One set of Desert and one set of Dune. I think the Deserts were a lot better than the dune editions... Luckily I caught their factory at an event at Little Sahara and they fixed them up! They put the wrong limiting collars on the first stage the first time around. It is hard to guess the setup for weight since it changes so much on a utility. I go from empty to 50 lbs on the front rack plus 20lb winch. Then 80 lbs of fuel and camping gear on the rear for a week in the mountains. On my race quads I usually told them 20lbs heavier than I was and it was right. I thought about Works since they are half price...

I think I bottomed out my fronts last weekend. Or the tire collapsed at 6.5psi and hit the rim.

I am on the fence for Elka's again.
My main issue is the broad application at hand. Even the Elka folks say that going from 80lbs of camping gear in the mountains, to 1200lb trailer on the farm, to cross country racing. They say one shock no matter how expensive won't do it all...
The consensus is to set them up in the middle for some heavier loads. So I don't know which way to go. I think the stock shocks are too stiff for my Colorado trip this summer.
Maybe I should buy a set of heavy load springs to swap out for the farm use.

yeah, there is no 'perfect' setup for all types of uses, only geared toward a middle ground...i set mine up for mainly fast riding, but will be towing a trailer next weekend and riding the rottie on the rack, so i'm sure i'll have some sag, oh well, the trip is only 90 miles each way lol

well, i plan on rebuilding my racks, at least the rear one, kawasaki now has the front and rear rack extensions available for the 08's, but that isn't the issue, its the amount of rack space and the steel tubing instead of a composite rack like polaris....

so i may not get done what i need by then and may take a sheet of plywood and cut it out to go over the rack and extend forward a bit, this will be a temporary measure until i redo the racks.....

here is some pics of him on my polaris when i had it:

I worry about that top pipe rail breaking a leg if it got caught in there. I would fill in those gaps with mesh etc..

yeah, i thought about it, but my dog is actually better at balancing on that rack than i am sitting on the seat....and the blanket i put on i drape over the rack as much as possible and bungee it on there, so let can't go through, but it does shift around from him moving all around sometimes
