Who makes a clutch kit for the riding I do, no mud, all trails, high altitude, so need an all around clutch kit, like the Heelclicker for the Polaris, even though they have one for the Brute Force, Cob said that they only work well when the machine is in stock form, since I may add some parts like programmer, pipe, etc don't want to go that way...

Also, what about springs, not sure which direction to go on the springs and which ones work well, what color, factory or EPI or what, if you have some thoughts/idea's, let me know?

The EPI black secondary, is strongly recomended for belt longevity. Not much of a performance improvment. It just helps the secondary sheeve grip the belt better.

On the primary side, mine is still stock. I really want to try the EPI pink. KOD & others feel it makes a big difference over the stock spring. Supposedly a nice trail spring.
The EPI Pink's engagement RPM is only a little higher than stock. Desireable when rock crawling in the mountains.
I think the drag racers & heavy mudd boggers like a more agressive spring yet. That's cool, but maybe not the best setup for trail & mountain.
Sounds like you do similar kind of riding like we do. Personally I would try EPI Pink primary/EPI Black secondary. Just one guys opinion.

not yet Justin, I will probably order in some springs and also a clutch kit and start experimenting to see what the best setup is...I've been working so many other things on the machine, haven't had time to get to the clutch yet, but thats coming...

Cool! Although I have been riding quads since I can remember, I have never actually modified one before. So, I rely on the opinions and experience of experienced modders for my research. Smile

Elkbow, as you know I do nothing but trail ride as well. After being unhappy w/ "kits" on my '05 I ended up just going w/ springs.
I have the black secondary and the pink primary on my '08. I had the same setup on my '05 and had great luck with it. It seems to be just as great in the '08. I tried the maroon primary and it was too much, in my opinion. Unless someone is going the "mud" route I think the pink is the best route.

How much did engagement RPM go up with that Pink primary?

If I had to guess. I would say somewhere between 200 and 400 RPMs. Could be more but if so it's not much more. It's not a huge step over the stock engagement. Which is nice for trail riding and tech. situations.

How would Maroon primary & Almond secondary compare to pink/black? Its just another suggestion I read elsewhere.

Hey all,

Sorry to bring up an old topic, but I thought it better than starting a new one about the same.

Anyway, I just moved back to PA from AZ, so I am glad I didn't modify the clutch springs yet. I was hoping you might be able to give me some recommendations for my new riding area... the NE. With varying terrain but mostly woodsy trails with occasional mud. I will not be mudding with this machine, but sometimes you can't avoid some over here. But I will be steering clear of the pits. I ruined my last machine in the mud and am not doing it with this one. So, what are your thoughts? Or is the setup already covered in this thread fine? Thanks

Justin

I put in the pink primary spring so far, i like it. I see on Daltons site they are working on a clutch kit for the 08 to be released soon. The thing I like about the Dalton, has adjustable weights, kind of like the Heelclicker, so can adjust for different spring settings, etc....

I wonder what the stock high altitude spring and weights are? I was planning on changing mine before the Colorado trip.

Hmm, I am pretty happy with the stock clutch, what improvement are you guys seeing? I know the 26" Horns are heavy and large I wonder if they should be treated like 27's for clutching?

The 26" Horns do measure 27" and that is documented... so it's your call on that.. the bigger tire clutch kit is gonna give a lot of low end torgue and power... it will wheelie like b$$##$... so it is your preference..

What about belts? I see they sell 3 grades of belt standard 450cc and smaller, heavy duty and severe duty. What do we have stock heavy duty? Aramid or Cotton? I am paranoid of belt powered machines as it is...

Your stock belt should do fine in higher altitudes... I would not worry about it..
