DETROIT (AP) - General Motors Corp. said Thursday that it may sell its Allison Transmission division as part of its effort to raise money and focus on its core business.

GM said in a news release that "it is looking at strategic options" for the Indianapolis-based transmission unit "including a potential sale of the business."

The world's biggest automaker lost $3.05 billion in the first three quarters of 2006.

Allison Transmission has 3,400 employees and seven plants in Indianapolis. It makes and sells automatic transmissions for commercial and military vehicles.

"This process is another potential step in GM's plan to improve liquidity through the assessment of strategic options for a business that is not central to GM's mission of designing, manufacturing and selling cars and light trucks globally," the company said.

GM shares rose 50 cents to $33.24 in morning trading on the New York Stock Exchange. They have traded in a 52-week range of $19 to $36.56.

If they sell it I would asume that they will just turn around and buy the transmisions they need from the new owner and I would also asume that they would most likely not sell it to Ford but who knows. It would probobly be something simmaler to AAM. That used to be part of Gm and still provides GM with there axles but now AAM also provides axles for who ever else wants to buy them, such as Dodge. The axle under my pickup and a Chevy are almost identicle with very few diferences, both provided by AAM.

An Allison Transmission backed up with a Cummings would give me a good reason to make my next diesel pickup a Dodge.

An Allison Transmission backed up with an Isuzu would give me a good reason to make my first diesel pickup a Toyota.

Just a thought.

You can already get that powertrain combination, they call it a Chevy/GMC Duramax

SOLD!

GM to sell Allison Transmission to Carlyle Group, Onex

General Motors said this morning it has agreed to sell its Allison Transmission commercial and military business to private equity firms Carlyle Group and Onex Corp. for about $5.6 billion.
The agreement includes seven manufacturing operations in Indianapolis and a worldwide distribution network and sales offices.
GM said it would retain a plant in Baltimore that makes conventional and hybrid two-mode transmissions used in GM’s light trucks.
The transaction is expected to close in the third quarter, pending union and regulatory approval. ...

I guess that does not include the Allison? HMMM

GM stock went up on the news . . .

Don't know about the Baltimore (White Plains) plant's future product identities . . .

A typical PROBLEM to CONSUMERS and to EMPLOYEES when components are SPUN-OFF to "private equity" owners . . . the new owners STRIP AND FLIP; they milk all the cash and assets out of the component they have bought ("strip"), paying themselves handsomely from the proceeds, then . . . dump what's left on the market ("flip"), leaving a wounded body if not a corpse where the former company stood, and lots of laid-off or fired workers . . .

Now, what about the WORLD'S LARGEST MANUFACTURER OR AUTOMOBILE PARTS (DELPHI?????????? "Old-Timer's Disease" has stolen their name from my current memory!), the bankrupt company, who just conducted an election with the United Auto Workers regarding a new, lower-wages, contract? Vote split; one large plant agreed, one did not; final voting today.

If this primary source for OEM parts to the US "major" automobile manufacturers folds, Katie bar the door, regarding economic, political, and social consequences to the US , , ,
