Ever since this thread , peaked my interest in it, I've been looking at doing something similar. I have a short box 3/4 Ton pickup and a front mounted toolbox along with a long wheelbase X2. I didn't want to hang that much weight out on the tailgate and didn't want that steep a load angle to load tailgate high. As the pickup has a class 4 reciever hitch on it, I was able to get a reciever blank for building your reciever hitch such as would be used for a vehicle without an available reciever or for building a hitch onto the rear of a 5th wheel camper for instance.

By building off of this, I am still able to utilize the reciever for pulling a trailer if necessary and only moved the hitch point back <5 inches. I built the platform to set behind and slightly lower than the top of the rear bumper. This gives me a 30 inch load height on level ground and the rear tires load a couple inches lower than that. Front tires set on the bed slightly ahead of the pickup axle and this still leaves clearance to open the toolbox.

Load angle with my trailer ramps looks a little steep, but the X feels quite stable loading and unloading on it. Monday I hauled it up into WY to ride and the roads are really tore up getting in and out due to melting and the severe rains they had about 10 days ago. The X rode fine on here and it was a lot easier getting around than dragging the trailer for one quad. Also mpg was 18.5 hauling it on the pickup compared to 13-15 hauling it on the trailer.

Here's a picture of it loaded and the trailer behind I took Sunday while I was trying it out dragging it around town. Notice I have my hondo along in case I needed to do any trail maintainance! 2thumbs

Looks like some heavy metal there Randy! Luckily, I don't have a toolbox and mine fits adequately well in the back of my truck!

RB, I used 1/4 in wall steel throughout on it. Didn't want to have to worry about it back there. Probably only about 60 lbs. so far....

1-800, I built it so I wouldn't have to pull the trailer if I was just going by myself. Diesel is down to $4.50 here (who thought we'd ever say down to $4.50???) won't take too many trips to pay for the steel on the fuel savings.

May build a folding ram on it yet before paint or else a way to anchor them to the rack and stored under the quad.
