Anyone have any experience with the Generac or other brand on board generators at high altitude? Will I have to worry about any adjustments or should it run fine at 9000+ ft?

I have a Generac 3400 watt lp generator for my toy hauler. I live at 7000 feet and use it between 7000 to 9000 feet most times. I have had no issues with it and have made no special mods or jetting to it.

Thanks TK, I'm at less than 1000ft. now and will be taking my toyhauler on vacation at over 9000ft. so I'm a little concerned since I've had to rejet all my bikes to get them to run right on previous trips. My generac is a 4800watt on board gas. Any others with experience with this?

I have a Kippor 3500 (honda clone). It came with my toy hauler and Ime not sure if I can even get diferent jets for it but I intend to at least check into it before this years Taylor Park trip. Last year I ran it with no mods at all and it did OK but it was obviuosly down on power. If you dont plan to realy use all its capacity then you should be able to get buy with no mods. My real problem was the fridge. It dident always wana lite rite off so I will definatly check into rejetting it and the watter heater. I dont wana run the generator 24/7 to power the fridge so it has to run off gas while out there and I had never even given it a thought till I had troubles getting it to lite. I talked to my dealer and they said it could be rejetted.

Brandon, thanks for the input on this. I hadn't thought about the fridge not lighting up!! Actually I'm taking the hauler in for a recall on the gas part of the fridge tommorrow and will ask them about any changes that can be done for high alt. operation, thanks!

I called Generac tech. dept. today on my generator (NP50Gas) and he told me there is no adjustment of the jetting on the carbs on these units as mandated by the epa when manufactured. Told me it should run fine so I'm taking his word for it. Shrug He also said as a rule of thumb gens. should be exercised at least once a month for 1/2 hr. at 1/2 load. Said it keeps the electronics free of condensation and that most faulty gens. coming in are low hr. units that have not been exercised on a regular basis. I don't know about other brands but for anyone with the Generac he told me these are designed for 3000 hour operation between rebuilds. Also he said it's much better on your generator and a/c unit if you just set it on high cool at the coldest setting and leave it there. Use your windows to let in a little outside warm air to regulate the temp. if needed. He said the constant cycling of the compressor is harder on the gen. and the a/c unit then just leaving it on and cranked drawing a constant even amperage through the system.

It's going to be down on power. At least the engine won't burn up by being lean. You might want to get an extra plug for it in case it fouls out by being too rich. Maybe open up the airbox. LOL

The open air box idea isent so bad. I did that on my little unit last year but I honestly couldent tell a difference. Probobly wont do it this year. We will be bringing along a second unit that a freind has as a backup incase mine craps out on us. I dont have the most faith in it as its a Chinese knock off unit that came free with the camper.

my Honda EU3000 says it is good for up to 8000 feet, lol, there is hardly any area's I camp that are less than that....it seems to run pretty good, but would probably be better if I went a slight bit leaner...I'll be taking it up to about 10000 feet in a few weeks, will see how it does

Very interesting discussion. I know the little carbs are supposed to be "set" and left per EPA but that doesn't mean they are not adjustable. Get the brand and model number of the little mixer and see what you can find on the web for it.

My gosh what is the world coming to? We're so into performance and modifications that now we are re-jetting generators, refrigerators, and hot water heaters! Where does it end? Next thing you know COB will be putting wheels and disc brakes on his walker and cane! Who Me ROFL

I rejetted my generator. Any time you are coming from sea level to the hills, you are dealing with far less air. Don't care what the expert says unless you have EFI you need rejet. Slap
