I stopped 9 times for fuel. I topped the tank off if at 1/4 tank or 100 miles remaining per the computers lie-o-meter. Also if approaching a Big City so I didn't have to deal with the wrong neighborhood if stuck in traffic. I made sure I had enough fuel remaining to stay in a traffic jam if need be. A few times I had 150 mile remaining or better.

2008 F-250 Crew Cab, Long bed, 4x4 1 ton rating with the 6.4 Diesel (to be cleaner diesel, but economy suks compared to earlier 7.3 version). Rear had the Bomb and other goodies loaded. I stayed at 70 mph in the 75 mph limits, and right at the posted limits for the rest of the trip.

I could afford a ticket, but didn't want any. And I made it out and back without any incidents.

From Colby Kansas to Leadville, via I-70 up and over the front range to Dillon, then south to Leadville via 91 and 24, I averaged 15 mpg.

From Leadville, up and over Cottonwood, a few trips to the Potluck camp site, then to Limon via 24, I averaged 15.63 mpg.

The best was 16.72 mpg from the Midway service terminal on the PA Pike to Indiana just before Indy (was hitting there near the evening Rush).

The worst was the 15, I hit Denver for 6PM Rush and did sit in some traffic.

I didn't yet get fuel since I home, as once i reached PA, my lead foot returned, and I did sit in traffic jams twice.

Thats not to bad for a 6.4. When they first came out I was hearing much worse thatn that. I have a 06 1 ton Mega Cab 4x4 Cummins and pulling 3 atvs with great big wind grabbing boxes on them and one in the box of the truck with a big box sticking up I averaged abought 12.5 at 70-75 out to Utah and back last week. Last March when we went to Missouri riding I had one in the box with no rack box on and one on a tiny aluminume trailer again with no rack box on and I got rite around 18 at 70.

How many miles and hours was it for you?? I know you have stated in years past but I dont remember. Thats gota be a LOOOOOOOONG drive. Utah was bad enough for me at 1300 miles and around 22 hours. Goin back to taylor Park next year.

The biggest factor for me on mileage, is keep an eye on air in the tires. Once I start looseing altitude I lose presure and mileage suffers. I check and adjust and mileage goes back up.

I didn't check the tires, have nitrogen in them.
edit didn't check them for pressure, but every fuel stop, and break, did a walk around visual, and kick the tires to make sure solid.

1900 miles, roughly 32 hours of driving, not counting the long breaks.

High rise topper on the back, so it wasn't a wind grabbing ATV.

You talking about your ATV or Truck? Sorry... Rockon made me do it! Big Grin

Any idea how that would compare to other trucks Kenny? Don't sound too bad for the load you had....

Sounds pretty good, ATVs aren't the most aerodynamic of towed loads and you didn't "baby" the throttle if you were going 70 part of the way. I just did a NH to Key West and back run 3,800 miles, 69 1/2 hours running time by the comp. with two different boats. Got 17.5 on the way down with a friends boat and 16.4 coming back with mine. Wasn't unhappy with the duramax but I kept my speed down to 65 except to pass on occasion (less with his boat), doubt I would have equalled your mileage if I had run 70 as my truck seems to drop off exponentially when I up the speed.

With my Train over the 1400 miles towing we just finished, I was averaging about 12mpg for the trip. A low of just under 11 and a high of nearly 14. I ran right at 65 mph unless the posted was lower.
65 used to drive me Crazy when I drove truck, but I just decided to slow down and enjoy this one. Mostly I was worried about the 6 ST rated tires behind me in the heat.

I don't know if it was everywhere, but for the most part in States around here, they (Hwy. Police) allowed 5mph over the post'd limit. As here in Pa. You can go bye a State Policeman doing 60 in a 55, and you're still on your way.

I was going across Kansas, Post'd limit 70. Per my digital display I was bouncing between 69 & 70 (rolling hills). This programmer I have the correct tire size entered, and is right on with 3 different GPS's, and those Construction Speed indicators.

A car passed me doing max 73, over the knuckle was a hwy patrol. He yanked the car over. I thought I was getting it, but just wanted around me (middle of passing a truck).

If next years trip turns solo, I'll try and stay at the 65, even if pulling a trailer will try staying at 65 or what evers post'd lower.

I did all the fueling, so it was right on, if not close to the same amount going in each time. Jersey has a law that attendants must dispense and fuel, didn't run into any of that where I stopped.

12-mpg really ain't that bad, considering that train you had behind. Although a little aerodynamic, still not the dynamic's of a COE, or brick.

Very interesting Kenny. Any idea how often your truck would regenerate and for how long on that trip?

Most times it did a short regen on back to back tanks. There was 1 or 2 tanks it didn't regen.

At home normal everyday driving, it's every other tank. If I needed fuel, and they only had low sulfur verses ultra low, the low sulfur went in. *I think* I read in my manual where you're not to run the bioblend. I stopped and that's all they had. Went to the next exit, again that's all they had, and it went in and ran fine. Wasn't about to exit hop.

When I 1st got the truck, ultra low was only available at 2 local stations. Kind of a dilemma when you need fuel now and the closest ultra stop is too far away. The Low went in. Now there's only a few that sell the low, they're slowly switching to the ultra. But if I need it, and low is what's available, that's what goes in.
