I just spent 3 weeks living in a tent (it was in FL, not up here in NH) and am thinking about something "more solid" for next winter. A truck camper would let me bring a boat/trailer (the Mv7 stays home) but I don't know much about them. Pretty much everyone on here talks of towed campers or toy haulers. Have any of you used a truck camper?

I had a 4-Wheel Pop-up truck camper that I used for close to 5 years. It was ideal for me because it was low enough to fit in the garage, it had a sink, refrigerator, furnace and would sleep 2 adults comfortably. No shower or other comforts but it was nice to be able to still go off road, get where you wanted, pop the top and be able to stand up, move around a little, be warm and sleep on a mattress. It also worked well when I had a little to much to drink and could go out and sleep in it even with the top down. All in all I enjoyed it but it wasn't all the wife wanted so that was the end of the story!

Pleaseeee----take this the way it is ment to be taken. This question is not intended to be judgemental, or anything rather then just askin' a question. From other's experience it has been learned that one can be given a DUI, if found passed out, or sleeping in a vehicle while drunk, wheather or not it was running, or not, and wheather or not the person even had the keys with him or her(had to throw the her in)so does the same hold true if sleeping it off in a camper?? or is the camper considered a domain?? or castle?? Is a search warrent needed to enter a camper??

As far as the orignal question, never owning a camper I can only offer what that my sleezy bro-in-law, after much trial and error, mostly error, finally ended up with a dually, Ford Diesel, big camper, which according to him(take it with a huge grain of salt)was the absolute greatest thing going, and anyone that couldn't see that was a stupid-etc. etc. etc. Sorry about the ramble, and sorry I mentioned the sleez bag. goodnight

Only a quarter liion or so to get one. Saw one heading down the road and I liked what I saw, until I saw the price. OMG!!! Slap

Your rights regarding search and seizure are the same as your house, car, or camper. The DUI scenario would not play out here in Colo. However, if you are plastered and the keys are in the ignition, then you have intent and its off to the county hotel for a few hours.

Truck campers are OK but are somewhat like having a motorhome. if you are out and about, and need something, pack it all up, go get it and when you return, hope your site is still there. The alternative is to tow another vehicle. Then the question is which is best to tow? A motor vehicle or a trailer that can be left at site. It seems no matter which way you decide, towing may be the final answer.

Thanks all, I appreciate any input. The few units I have looked at can be separated from the truck (as long as you get the electric jacks) in about ten minutes leaving the truck free to run erands or launch/retreive the boat without having to "break camp", lining the truck up to back underneath again might not be so easy but doesn't have to be done until it's time to go (seeing this "in action" last month was one of the reasons I am interested in the idea). They do seem tight inside but certainly not worse than the tent. Anyone else have any experience (good or bad) with them?

I grew up traveling from Washington State to Iowa as a kid in a camper in the back of a truck. Mom and Dad drove while us kids rode up top above the cab watching the highway pass. Dad would drop the camper at the KOA and we would go sight seeing.

We recently picked up a 9 foot camper that is a bit old but we got it cheap and it is watertight with only a few drafts here and there as can be expected.

When I say camper, I mean the kind that you jack up, back the F350 truck under and set it down in the bed, includes a queen size bed over the cab and a double bed on one side made by dropping the dinning table down. The kitchen is on the other side.

With a little practice and some good help, it doesn't take much to get lined up and backed under the camper. It is just a bit freaky jacking up a camper so the bottom is 38 inches or so off the ground so you can back a 4x4 one ton under it. It gets a bit wiggly.

I know there are lots of folks who call camp trailers and canopies "campers" but I think you and I are on the same page.

We have only used ours for attending out of town swim meets last fall and this winter and it sleeps great with family of 4. In fact sometimes we had to crack vents to cool it down while using the oven as the heater. And that was with 15 degree nights.

We plan to partially disassemble the son's XR80 and put it in the camper and load the other son's quad on top of ours on the trailer and go for weekend rides this summer. We will probably bring tents for the kids but at least we will have a hard bedroom/kitchen to hang out in. The 9 foot camper only slightly overhangs an 8 ft bed and with a receiver and long stinger, a trailer will tow great.

I don't have a clue what they want for new campers but if you keep your eyes open in classifieds, you will probably find a decent one fairly cheap.

I think I saw you. Years ago this use to be a rather common sight, youngsters riding over the cab looking out the window. More then once I was given the finger by those youngsters-a little freedom from mom and dad. It was always funny.

Poopsie and I have used our pickup camper many years. Bought our first about 10 years ago. If I had need for a fifth wheel or a motor home, I'd stay home where it is more comfortable, cheaper and roomy, without all the hassle. We can stay in a local motel cheaper than driving or hauling one of them. I am in the hills to enjoy the quads, we spend very little time in the camper more time outside along side the fire.
Ours is a 10ft wih queen size bed shower and toilet. For the two of us very comfortable, easy to haul and easy to get in most places. We have stayed in it down to 20 below and felt comfortable.

Sometime I would like to have a truck mounted camper. But then again on a 3 day weekend I like to take a shower after a dusty day on the trails.

From what I have seen they are very expensive for the amount of space you get. Plus I think they are intended for long beds. They look a little odd in a 6ft bed. Those contraption trailers with a hut and 8x8 cargo pad on them are pretty cool looking.
