I can't wait to drive one. I work at a dealership and we are suppossed to be getting our first ones in anyday now.

Take my advice, please, and remove your rose colored glasses when they talk about the new maintenance routines with this 6.4. Be sure and watch the video and ask lots of questions. If you have a diesel now take everything you know about it and forget it! This new ULSD diesel technology will be a complete headach for those that insist they know how to run diesels. This baby is all new and so is the users manual, lol.

Congratulations, Stealth!

Please keep us advised on your experience.

The "Warning Label" on Diesel fuel pumps appears quite menacing; more or less, it says, if one puts old-style Diesel fuel in a new (2007) truck made for the "Ultra" stuff, the ground will develop huge cracks, the sky will fall, and the world as we know it will end . . .

I'm kinda frustrated; fully expect the new fuel to cost more than the old, but . . . my moldy-oldie D2500 can't take advantage of the new go-juice's properties . . . in fact, I may get less power and lower mileage from the new fuel.

My wife asked, "Who'd want to buy your truck, now?"

Good question.

Nevertheless, I'm very happy for you and your 21st-Century truck, Stealth; here's wishing you many happy and care-free miles in your new ride!

Well I only have 360 miles on my new beast and so far it is great. I am really happy with mine. I am working on the bed still... I hope to be road worthy by the end of March. We are planning on breaking the new ride in May headed for Idaho and Montana... THe new engine is so quiet.. My 2000 F-350 is chipped and runs like a spotted ape... The new 6.4 seems to be more refined on power. It feels really stronger but does not move out any quicker than my 7.3. Will know next month when the additional weight is added.
I am sure your wife will love the way it drives and rides. One thing you will notice right away is the turning.. It turns much tighter than before and also much tighter than Chevy or Dodge. My 550 is 28" longer than my F-350 and turns much tigher than the 350....
Here is a link to mine...

Say Tree Farmer your perfectly legal and safe to run the ULSD in your 2500. Many people here are running it and have no complaints. It is trying to run the LSD or older fuel in the ULSD engines that is a HUGE no no and will result in severe performance and driveability problems.

The amount of diesel engine concerns has dropped to almost none since they finally started to get the decent LSD and ULSD here, been since about October I guess. While I haven't seen it in print yet the ULSD fuel was rumored to be a minimum 54 cetane. It is certainly higher, no doubt, but I can't say exactly what it is. Doesn't take much to get better than the 30-32 we normally get here. Eek

If you have an older deisel I would run the 2 stroke oil to keep the injecters lubed up and if your running an older dodge then us the 2 stoke to keep the VP44 injector pump lubed.

Thanks Guys

Yeah, they recommend the low sulfur diesel, no bio... I am looking forward to getting it. The new body style is awesome with the Superduty Chrome grill, Breather Vents on the sides.. etc...

This link will lead you to the new labels being used at stations that sell diesel fuel. They are very clear about what vehicles can and cannot use the LSD fuel. However there is still some confusion to be had.

The 2007 model year Ford trucks running the 6.0 diesel engine are NOT required to run the ULSD and are exempt from penalities for not doing so. The 07 Powerstroke is a carryover 06 engine and is therefor granted legal immunity from the ULSD requirement. I am not sure if Dodge or GM have any carry over engines or, for that matter, any other companies.

Stealth mentioned the bio diesel. A common misconception is that the manufacturers do not want anyone to run that fuel. While partially true there is good reason for it. They have not done any R&D with that fuel to determine what kind of problems could arise from it. I think we will see bio diesel engines soon but not until they can determine if longevity is affected. It isn't so much that they do not want people to use bio as it is they cannot guarantee emissions compliance or engine longevity with its use.

Has anyone seen the ULSD in a manner that allows them to compare it to good ol fashioned diesel? Is the color similar? Odor? I haven't seen it yet so I am curious.

Also the link I provided above is part of the website Ford and GM refer dealers to to help answer questions from both consumers and dealership personell alike. I guess knowing that one could assume that the information provided is believed accurate.

I don't know if you Ford guys know this or not but will give you this information if needed. On the early Ford Super Duty's prior to 2004, you had to buy an expensive digital ($400) box to get SEIC. If you are not aware of what this is, it stands for Stationary Elevated Idle Control. It is pretty cool because it is used to control a PTO off the transmission. It allows you to set a fast idle to run aux. equipment. I don't have any aux. equipment but it is a neat option to have when someone needs a jump, want to leave you vehicle running while you have a pet inside and want to keep it cool, etc. I used it several times helping someone with a dead battery. Point is, this is built into the 2005 and later. All you need to do is add a on-off switch or if you have the upfitter switches on the dash, just add a jumper wire. Then turn on the switch and your engine idle will speed up to 1200 RPM's. Great for charging a dead battery. If you want more information, just let me know...

Not for sure if this is what your talking about Exposed but my 03 ford deisel will idle at 1k if I dont touch the brakes or excelorator then it drops back down to around 600rpm. If I leave it idleing for more than about 30 or 40 secs with out my foot on the brake it will idel up to 1k too. Its great for warming it up on those cold mornings just start it and run back in the house.

I recall those being popular in the 7.3's prior to the 99 model year. Since 99 a high idle has been built in to keep the EOT high enough. This normally occurs only at cooler temps but during extended idling this will still occur even on warm days. The idle jumps up to about 1200 and will stay there until any of input such as brake BOO switch activation brings it down.

We just got our 6.4 in this morning and let me say, it is sweet! Very little diesel smell from the exhaust even when cold. The cold start (16 degrees this am) was impressive. It started and idles as though it was already warmed up. The guys drove it and said it feels strong but isn't a rocket. The owner said seat of the pants it felt as good as or a touch better than his chipped 6.0 Excursion. Of course these are not built for fast acceleration but, rather, pulling and I suspect this will pull with the best of them. Smile

This has nothing to do with warm up on a cold morning. The SEIC device I ordered with my 2000 is has a digital display module and is adjustable to set at any RPM up to 2400. You just punch in the desired RPM and it will hold it until you release it. The newer trucks don't come with the module but allow you to set it for 1200 RPM at any time and for as long as you want with just a switch. You can get fancy and add your own requirements since Ford has a pig tail access with about 12 wires to control and modify all the inputs..

Duck_Snort... So you picked it up.. It is quiet isn't it??? You are right about the smell, I am not for sure what it smells like but not a diesel... It does feel strong.. Can't wait to get hook up and see how it tows. Trailer Life reviewed it last month hauling a 20,000 pound fifth wheel. It was a pretty impressive article...

I know what the SEIC is, like you said a manual adjustment for high idle. We used to install them on the pre 99 7.3's. Since then the high idle has been enough for most consumers in this area. As a matter of fact the only add on's I have seen have been on wreckers.

I didn't pick up a 6.4, I work at a dealership. I wish I owned one, lol. It is very nice for sure. The engine is, in my opinion, only the icing on the cake. The rest of the truck has been fully refined making it a serious work capable machine. The interior is as nice as any Lincoln, Cadillac, or foreign luxury vehicle. I can't wait until we get a couple Lariats and King Ranch models in. Thumbup

By the way you listed your 07 F550 as your new one. That comes with the 6.0 not the 6.4 doesn't it? All of our source books show the 6.4 only being in 08 and newer vehicles. Maybe I need to re-read them and make sure I didn't mis-understand them.

Good Catch Duck_Snort.. I changed my profile to reflect it is a 2008 not 2007. It is the new one with 6.4...

The biggest reason I liked the SEIC is if you have a vehicle that needs a jump, you can set the RPM's up and it will charge in no time. Also we used to have a small poodle and it was really nice in the summer to leave running to keep the cab cool while we grabbed something to eat on the road...

Since you work at a dealership, do you have access to wiring diagrams??? I have been waiting on Helm to release but they say Ford has not given them the go ahead to sell. They have them on a CD/DVD now but are out of stock of them... Just curious...

Yes I have access to all available Ford and GM wiring diagrams. What do you need? I have not tried to copy and past them but should be able to figure out a way to get you what ya need.
