I've got my 96 F250 with a E4OD tranny and this weekend while towing my trailer I got to where I was going, went to jockey the trailer around and my tranny puked about 4 qts. Let the tranny cool down, checked the fluid level, filled it back up and went for a test drive. It ran fine, shifted good with no noise and didn't leak out again. I didn't tow my trailer home but did get the truck back. Anyone had any issues like this? I'm taking it in tomorrow to have the shop check it out and I'll be adding a bigger tranny cooler with a fan. Any info would be great. I've been looking thru the ford forums and haven't found anything yet. Thanks.

I would say it got really, really hot for some reason. I think a fluid and filter change is in order if nothing else. If something is going on, there should be some evidence in the pan. The trans has mostly electrical components, so you can see if it stored any codes when this occurred. My guess would be the torque converter.

Yeah the reason it got that hot IMO is that when moving the trailer there wasn't good air flow around the cooler. I was pushing it back up a hill in 4wd. The spot was gravel and it was real tight so I was stopping and getting out alot to double check clearance. There were no signs of any failure other than the fluid that leaked out. No noise or anything. So when it goes in tomorrow it'll be getting new fluid and filter for sure, just didn't know what else to be looking for. Also, it didn't throw any codes. No check engine, no idiot lights came on, nothing.

I had installed a B&M pan on my old Bronco. It held an additional 3 quarts of fluid. I also used Mobil 1 synthetic ATF, but that can get very expensive.
