Could have been just in the campgrounds we checked, or could be that rule has changed since I was last there. It's been quite a few years.

Most of the campgrounds allow tents. It was only one called Fishing Bridge that mandated hard side only. We were up there in a popup and stayed at one of the others without incident.

There are enough problems with the Grizzlies that there is no way I would camp in a popup anything in Yellowstone. THose bears can smell food anywhere and a bit of nylon doesnt offer much warning that a bear is coming after you. Remember that story about the kid who spent his summers among the griz population in Alaska? Those bears where just waiting for that kid to get dumb enough so they could eat him for lunch, which they did.

I don't mind blacks or browns as they tend to avoid any contact with people unless you happen to get between momma and cub. If you do that, you deserve what you get. Otherwise, they are not going to come digging around looking for you. Every time I came upon a black bear out hunting, as soon as they got a whiff of me or I got their attention, they were running away faster that I could have if I would have been spooked.

IMO, Popups are about one step above a tent. The Jayco I have will go places where the TT won't since it has some serious ground clearance. But if I had it to do over, I would forgo the popup and put the $$ towards a trailer. Live and learn.

Done the tents! Done the tent popup camper! Done the 26' trailer trailer! Done the 32' class A motor home! I think a smaller hard side travel trailer is the way I looking at going again too! Just big enough to have a bathroom, kitchen and beds! Big Grin
