Has anyone had experience with one of these? Diesel, auto. Have a chance to get one with about 100k. Any common bugs? What sort of fuel milage can one expect on trips. I know tough question, but am expecting that it should be in the 30 mpg+ range.

Have a friend who had one up till about a year ago. There's had over 200k when they had a problem and decided to move on. If I recall correctly, mileage was upper 40's to low 50's but there's was a Rabbit, not a Golf!

I agree on the mileage, had two Diesel Rabbits. Only replaced a starter on one of them, but that was $400!.

They run great, I got a speeding ticket in one. 50 miles to the gallon on the highway and about 39 around town. Make sure that you drain the fuel filter regularly to keep the water out of the fuel, and plug it in, in the winter or it won't want to start.

Only one pitfall, you would be better off with the 5 speed than automatic.

Thanks, I know about diesel rabbits, great little cars, would get 50 mpg back then. Noisy, but then if you didn't want to talk to whoever was with you, it was good. The noise got irksom after about 700 miles.

Right-would rather have a stick, but this one is a auto. The Golf is turboed-right?

I had a 1998 Jetta TDI. Most of my driving was around town, hardly any highway. I got 41 MPG. It was a 5 speed. Nice get up and go. One problem I hated about it. If you don't put a oil seperator from the carnkcase to the turbo intake, you end up with oil in the intake hoses, intercooler and gummed up intake manifold. I had a section of rubber hose right before the intake manifold blow(split). The computer sees a low pressure from the turbo and then goes into limp mode. Can't do the speed limit on the highway then. I suggest going to this site for all kinds of info- www.tdiclub.com.

I have a 2005.5 New Jetta TDI 5 speed and i love it. I get around 35+ in town and around 45+ on the highway depending on how i drive it. I get 45 at around 75, and get 50+ if i run 55-65. I have 43K on mine and i have not had one problem with mine. The Golf's usually got a little better then mine. 100K miles should be fine on it; that engine and drive train will last forever if you take care of it. I highly recommend VW's. The best car i have ever owned and the next one will be a New VW Tiguan TDI.

My father has an 04 VW TDI Bug and seems to like it, he has 135,000 miles on it.
He has had a few problems with the turbo and injectors, both costly repairs, but still likes that fact that he can get 47 to 50 miles to the gallon.

My wife and I have an 06 VW Passat (gas) and love it as well.
We (wife and I) have had Audi's , 5000cst and A6 and liked the A6 over the 5000 but for the money the Passat has been our better car.

It's hard to beat the German engineering (with the exception of the Mexico built bugs)

Thanks Catfish--found out a new diesel isn't available, but should be out next year. I think I'll wait till then, and see what transpires. I just think diesel is the way to go!
