I traded in my 99 Silverado yesterday for a 2008 Silverado. Of course the price of gas jumped up from $3.55 to $3.65 yesterday too.

Purdy--guess it has that sequencial fireing-order deal, that disables certain cylinders when not needed, greatly enhancing fuel milage, so need you to keep me what you think of it, and how it does the job. Cadallac tried it a long time ago, and it just didn't work. Now with all the 'puter stuff, maybe they have it dialed in.

I have a 04, and its been a good rig so far, 77k, gets decent milage, enough power for a '26 foot camp trailer, a 4 horse trailer full of horses or cows. Good rig.

One thing I can't figure out is why they have made the beds so deep. It occured after '04, and Ford does it too. Can't see any advantage to it.

Humm--your trees haven't leafed out yet either.

Not to bash-but unless I'm missing something, just can't see what Toyotas offer thats not offered by our own iron. Talking to the few toy owners, seems like their milage isn't much better then what I get with my 04, powerwise can't say they are better.

What am I missing?? I know about the international participation in tk construction, no matter the nameplate, but methinks GM, Ford, and Mopar still make a good product.

I took the truck for 200 mile ride today and got 17.8 mpg. About half and half between highway and back roads. I couldn't tell the difference when the engine went from V8 to V4 mode or back. So far so good. Oh the seats are pretty comfortable too.. Smile

My niece has an almost identical truck down in Arkansas. She lives outside of Mountain Home and commutes about 20 miles to work and claims she gets middle 19s to high 21s with her truck with a little over 5000 miles on it. That's close to 4 better than I get with my 2001 Silverado with the regular 5.3 in it. Heck I was happy with the almost 2 mpg improvement that I got over my 1991 5.7 Silverado so things other than the payment for a new truck look fairly good!

My brother traded his 00 xcab Z71 with 184K miles for a new loaded LTZ Z71 08 Silverado. He likes it. I don't like the way the doors shut personally. He likes the AFM it only uses 4cyl mode on flat low or no load ground. His mileage is 15-17 mostly city.
I am ticked GM went back to rear drum brakes on the 1500. 4 wheel disc is so much nicer.

But my F250 does the same mileage and will move a house if you put wheels under it. The cost of diesel does suck though.

Now that sucks I use to get 17 to 19 back and forth to work and 19 to 21 on the highway with my old '00 chevy Z71 and you all are saying the new trucks with the fancy motor is only getting 15 to 17 mixed so a lose of 2 mpg and higher prices at the pump. Guess I will have to look in to an older used one instead of the new one I was looking at.

It is all up to the driver and local conditions I guess. His old 00 got 14-15 max so he improved 2mpg with the new truck. The new trucks are heavier with more safety, emissions, and luxury. They both have the same 5.3L engine essentially. HP requires fuel. You can't have all of these 320-403 HP pickup trucks without eating more fuel. If I were to buy one today I would get a Vortec Max package with the 367hp 6 liter. It has the heavy duty trans and 4 wheel disc brakes. A guy at work has a GMC Denali with the 403hp 6.2L engine. That is a hot rod pickup!

GM quotes 14/19 depending on 2wd/4wd city highway etc. Anything over 14 is a blessing.

That 17.8 mpg is a huge improvement over what I was getting with my 99 Silverado. The last time I checked the mileage on the 99 it was about 10mpg. The best it ever got was 17.5 on a trip to FL. When I was using the 99 to deliver mail the best it got for gas milage was between 11-13 then it started dropping as the years went by. The last time I checked the mileage on it when using it for work the mileage was about 7.

I like the way the doors on the 08 shut. I always had to slam the doors on my 99 to get them to shut on the 1st try and the passenger door would never stay open when I wanted it to. Plus my 99 had small squeaks in the interior since day one. The 08 rides well and is very comfortable and quiet plus I really like the power back windows.

I looked at the Vortec Max and would of liked the extra power but the 6.0 sucks up way too much gas.

Gotta agree, putting drum brakes back on is a big step backwards. Maybe they figured that with low usage, there was just to many cases of frozen brakes. Again, am just tickled with my 04 halfton, with the 327. Its doing just what I wanted it to do. Provide enough power when needed, and small and lite enough to provide some fuel milage. Keep seeing the advertisements of a 400 hp Chev, that gets 20+ mpg, hwy. Like to see that!

Drum or disk brakes doesn't matter to me as long as the truck stops. I do remember reading about GM's problems with mushy brakes and rusting rotors on the previous body style trucks. I use to go through brakes so fast they never had a chance to rust but the rear brake dust shields rusted away to nothing and to replace them the axles had to be pulled. Did that once. Also the parking brake set up in the previous body style trucks just plain sucked.

Yeah MailManX2 the praking brake never did work on my '00 and the dust shield was toast almost from the day I got it. But it sure stopped me and my 32' 5th wheel camper just fine. Whould still have it but the suspension and power was just to lacking when towing the camper.

Thinking on it, I guess I might have one complaint. The tk will spend quite a bit of time on dusty primitive roads, and it will leak quite a bit of dust, not into the cab so much, but dust will accumulate inside the door area around the latches and hinges. Guess dust makes it into the cab also, but is not really noticable. Usually I run the ac in these circumatances, so the cab is pressurized.

A lot of the time on these primitive roads, I pull the 4 horse bumper trailer. With the quad-steer, I'm able to turn this rig around on the narrow roads, in just about the same space as jack knifing a regluar cab pu, with a 18 foot goose-neck trailer. Handy!
