If it hits south Louisiana.... I will get around 60 to 70 mph winds and LOOOOOTTTTS of rain..the amount of rain and wind depends on what side the Hurricane Eye passes..

I live in NE LA...about 5 hours from the coast...

For instance with Katrina...we got 60 to 75 mph winds and about 2 inches of rain..because the Hurricane Eye passed East of me....

With Rita...we got around 30 mph winds and about 15 inches of rain... with the Eye passing West of here...

The affect on us here is the where the Eye passes...

Cajun is only an hour or so from the Coast so he would get major 100 MPH plus winds....if it comes in at a Cat 3(130 MPH)

Yeah Cajun, that storm is aimed at my back yard right now. Like you, these storms are more of an aggrevation than anything.
To deal with the heat after a power outage, I have an old window unit AC out in the shop that I install in a den window and plug it into the generator. Keeps at least part of the house very comfortable. I'll gladly pay $3.50/gal gas for that generator 24 hr/dy (runtime is ~1 gal/2 hrs)vs living in misery for the typical 24-36 hr outages we experience.

I'm a lot closer to the coast than that. I live about 30 miles due north of Vermilion Bay. Although I heard the civil defense folks advise that we could have storm surge in Lafayette Parish for a cat 5, there's little chance I'd have storm surge at my house. Storm surge has tremendous power. I might lose a roof, but storm surge will take your house off the slab. That would have to be a direct hit with a cat 5 in Vermilion Bay. In any case, that would be bad. I think I would leave even if I had to sit in my truck in a parking lot somewhere in north Louisiana.

No one knows how strong this one will untimately be, but we have a least a few that were in the cat 2-3 category. Lili was a cat 4 but lost considerable strength and made landfall as a cat 2. We had a lot of damage, but no doubt due to tornados that spawn in these storms.

Hurricanes are rated on the Saffir-Simpson Scale. Bear in mind the wind speeds are sustained speeds, not gusts.

Oh my...good luck Cajun. And others. Hope it's just an annoyance like GeauxTiger says.

I know the damage we get with 70MPH gusts...hard to imagine sustained wind like that.

They don't usually hang around so you probably get 3 hours or so of the really bad stuff. It's scary when it happens at night and many were at night when I was younger. But if you're unfortunate to be near the eyewall, the wind changes direction over that time. That takes a toll on things.

If it came in like the 11:00 forecast it wouldn't be too bad for us. It would cover a lot of land before it got real close. Once the eyewall makes landfall they lose strength quickly. So if one came straight up Vermilion Bay, the fact that I'm 30 miles away, we would get the full brunt of the winds. If a cat 5 did that, I'm sure we'd have 150 mph winds here. I have no idea what that would do, but it wouldn't be positive. After all it's described as: "Complete roof failure on many residences and industrial buildings. Some complete building failures with small utility buildings blown over or away." Trees help block the winds and we have a lot of them. However, a lot of them do fall. Some of the trees I took out could have reached my house.

They said on the news this morning that motels in southern Arkansas are beginning to get booked up. May start seeing a lot of Louisiana plate cars and trucks in the area soon. Met a few people from La. when Katrina and Rita hit 3 years ago. Hope you guys make it through without too much damage. We may even feel the impact if it stays on course or moves a little west. When Rita came up, we had 6 inches of rain and 40 m.p.h. winds.

The LSU-Appalachian St football game scheduled for 4PM tomorrow in Baton Rouge has been changed to a 10AM game. I-10 Contraflow out of New Orleans is tentatively scheduled to begin at ~6PM tomorrow. Gotta get those 100,000 drunken football fans out of there before 500,000 drunken N.O. residents come thru Baton Rouge!

And all those drunks have to come through my home town, not only on I-10 but Hwy 90 as well. I don't plan on straying far from home tomorrow. The update is coming, I've just been taking care of business.
