Boy...are these P&S cameras getting good! I own a DSLR Nikon D80 and lenses, but like to carry a small Canon Elph P&S on the quad and other trips where the large SLR is too much, short story long...I left my Canon in Moab last trip. It was a 4 megapixel. So kind of been looking around for a good deal, just happened to look under the counter at Circuit City last week and they had a SD950 display model marked WAY down...this is a 12 megapixel P&S. I've seen my old pictures off the 4 meg, and Cobs off his Nikon and knew they were pretty darn good. But darn....the pics I'm getting are REALLY good. Makes one pause and wonder if the cost of the digital SLR is worth it. I have not pushed the little Canon, and know it may struggle in low light conditions (MAYBE! the built in anti vibration gives you a couple more f stops to work with on the P&S)so I suspect the big boy will be better in extreme conditions, plus you have different lens options. The image quality is very close other then that.

The kicker is the pics I've been seeing and the reports say that the Fuji F100fj is better yet then the canon. Pretty awesome. Anyone else notice this thrend or just as impressed with their small cameras?

I have one of those adjust everything, change lens camera's. It's put away, as the P&S suit me better now.
When I was looking at updating, I too looked around http://steves-digicams.com/ and consulted with a armature photographer. I bought what *LURCH77* recommended, and haven't been sorry. I used this LURCH77 guy twice, both times he lead me in the right direction.

Been a NIKON guy all my life .... but I have to give it to Canon PowerShot G9 for the P&S .... Is just and amazing camera and the quality is superior to any other competitors. Rugged construction and a bit pricey too.

I'm with ya Rocks....love the Nikon, but the way canon gives their pics a little extra color and sharpness, sure make them look good.

Have you played with the Nikon S600 yet? sweet pocket camera about the size of your wallet. Looks like they are stepping up a bit. That was what I was going to buy till I saw the SD950.

I've been looking. Sounds like that SD950 might be worth checking out.

If you want a small pocket camera any of the SDXXX Canon's are good, built tuff, the Nikon S600 is really small, Fuji F100 are sweet too, if something bigger works check out the AXXX Canons, a little larger camera, longer zoom, and cheaper. IQ is excellent.

My biggest thing is get one with an eye view finder and not just the lcd on the back if you can...easier to hold steady and get better pics. Don't be fooled into thinking the higher the megapixel the better, not always the case, most use the same size sensor and cram more pixels on it, resulting in noise you can see when enlarging that special shot of delicate arch. The SD950 has a larger sensor for the 12mpxs. There are 4 megapixel Nikons that have a much better picture then most of the 12's.

I have had both the Canon Powershot and Nikon Cool pix and I must say the Canon takes a more colorful picture. I also have a Canon Eos Rebel Digital SLR and the picture quality there is far superior, but it does not work good on ATV trips too dusty and too expensive (for me) to be hauling around everywhere.

My brother got a new Cannon and it has neat features and great quality. I am on my second generation of Casio Exilm with the 1050 now. I chose it for fast start up and great battery life. I may charge it 3 times a year and I take 2-3 thousand pics a year.
