Well Guys.....

I got the Copperhead ECU Installed today on the KQ 700.. This device is made by Velocity Devices out of Canada.. I know there has been some mixed reviews on this product over on another forum..so I want to clarify a few things here....
This device when it comes from the factory is set up for A Stock quad and my case a stock 700 KQ...no pipes, no big wheels, no TFI units or the such.... The folks on the NYROC forum had problems with their VDI's mainly due to installing the uhit on non-stock quads...

However, if you do mod your KQ ..you can adjust the VDI accordingly to compensate for the changes with down loadable maps from the VDI website..

Now for the performance results.... I tested the quad before and after installation of the VDI.... I ran approximate 100 yard sprints 5 times without the VDI and 5 times with the unit on and races averaged out like this..

Without VDI: 48.5 MPH
With VDI: 53.5 MPH

As you can see, with the VDI my KQ picked 5 mph in the sprints.. Most of the power gains are realized in the Low and Mid ranges and it produces smooth power throughout... The low end lag that the king has inherent has been totally removed... This thing will shoot out of the gates now with tires spinning like crazy....

IMO.. this is a great product..little pricey at $500, but It does improve overall power for the KQ 700..l.. Velocity Devices claims a 21 percent HP increase...not sure about that exact amount because I do not have access to a Dyno,,, however as shown above it did improve sprint speed by 10 plus percent...

I do recommend this product for fellow KQ 700 owners.....

Good report Voodoo and thanks for posting, it looks like the 10% gain in speed hauling a big old boy like you is some positive results. You might get a surprise the next time you race your wife. snoopy

I would be curious as to how you mounted the VDI box,...I know pictures are a pain in the *** but it would help with the installations.
Are you going to carry the original as a spare-just-in-case ?? Might not be a bad idea for a while. Big Grin

THX guys

Yeah.. Stutz I am gonna carry the stock ECU just for craps and giggles for sure....

I was surprised at the power increase because I have tried many of these things in the past on various quads, but this is the real deal...

I will get some pics in the next couple of days... I basically put it where the stock ecu was ..with a little finagaling (if that's a word)....

I am curious how the KQ will now stand against the Outty.

Congrats on the gains, what did it do to the low end? Do you see any gains on the low end?

Cat....

Oh yeah... the biggest gains are in the low and mid ranges for sure...no more low end lag....

I can tell you...the KQ may be a little closer to the Outty, but I don't think it can beat it... However, I will line them up and see....

Thanks for sharing the comparative data, Voodoo!

I had the opportunity to dyno my Prairie, with and without an ignition module, answering lots of questions and removing any doubts about quantifying the effect on performance.

Now, maybe someday, someone will publish quantifiable data regarding ignition advance and Polaris performance! Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin

Here are some installation pics of the Copperhead ECU from Velocity Devices Inc.

Note: That currently I have it velcroed to the bottom of the frame , but I will be securing it more with metal screws later..
We had to move the fuse box to right side of the compartment , but that is not an issue or hard to do...

All that *excess wiring* from the winch contactor,.... is that necessary? I take it that these are not pictures of your installation but are ones from Copperhead ?

Nice review Vodoo, glad it worked out for you. Sounds like it really unlocks the beast within those KQs.

No Warith ...I sold the Sp 700... I kept having over heating problems with it...

The KQ would be faster because the Polaris is about a 100 pounds or more heavier.....

The Warn 2500 winch kits that are most often bundled with the purchase of a new King Quad, come with pre-cut 4 gauge wires that have crimped on ends. There is enough wire for many installation setups or routing paths, much more than the King Quad 700 front mount needs. Looks like most people just loop up the excess wire under the seat. All that extra wire isn't necessary, no but I for one don't have 4 gauge terminals in stock and I did just like most people and zip tied up the excess 'for now'. Big Grin
Here's my installation (and my charge voltage at idle!)

Hey Voodoo. Notice that your low lock limiter and your reverse limiter are now gone?
Jam the throttle on pavement in 4WD reverse and prepare to eat handlebar!

I carry the stock ECU for a spare in the front compartment, wrapped in bubble wrap. You'll want to keep it anyway, for the diagnostic codes you get when you short the pins on the test connector.. VDI ECU doesn't do that.

Well Boys and Girls

I lined the KQ 700 up against the Outty 800 yesterday and ran about 10 races in a 100 yard sprint.... Even though the VDI Box helps ... the Outty still won by an average of 3 to 4 lengths.... I was riding the Outty and my wife was on the KQ... I am pleased with the KQ and what the VDI has added to it... but, it is hard to beat 800 CC's of Rotax....

I would be curious about top speed,...and I think that the KQ would real the Outty in at about 60 MPH as they are high geared and just purr around 45 MPH and will get 28 MPG.

My wife has had the KQ up to around 65 mph so far...I think it will go faster though...I have had the Outty over 75 mph and at that point it is just too scary.....
