When I pull it off the trailer I start it in neutral and move the lever to high and it makes a grinding noise. Should I have to roll it to get it to drop in gear? I go up to Low and it engages. I went around the neighborhood tonight. In high when I come to a stop then hit the gas again. It kind of revs then catches and the tires bark. It is a weird feeling little catch. Is the trans broke or is this normal. Sometimes it takes off normal and smooth and sometimes it does and catch and bark take off.

The grinding means that you haven't let it idle down enough before pushing the gear lever. It idles a bit higher on a cold start for a short while but you should be able to put it in gear cleanly within five seconds or so, when you hear the idle settle down.

That's actually the belt barking!
It doesn't take much of a quick stop to leave the belt partway down the back clutch. It's just riding style probably unconscious.
There's a longer description in Nyroc's 'Tech Tips' under 'Belt bark...'.
