last year my husband and I were riding double in divide, on a grizz, he was driving and we started up an incline and the back tire slid off the road into a culvert and i tried to bail off the back and my foot got caught under the left back tire and i went to the ground and the quad rolled over on top of me and stopped. for a brief few moments i saw my life flash in front of me. broke ribs and bruised my intestines, gas poured inside of my helmet and burned the inside of my mouth. then had to ride out with broken ribs. needless to say I have not been on a quad since then. still have the urge though. cant get over the fear.

ouch, that sounds painful.

It's a whole different thing when you are driving, and thankfully there are a wide variety of trails around here, from dirt road to very challenging. you might be able to ease back into it by solo riding, first on easy dirt road type trails.

I flipped and rolled Popo 500 3 years ago. Totaled it out, bruised or broke a rib, scraped up a little.

I still ride and would go the exact place today, but with better knowledge of what I am doing.

A good crash (that doesn't kill ya) is a good teacher of what to do or not to do in the future. But, what do I know, I am from Kansas,,,LOL

I always get back on and ride. But takes awhile to get my confidence back. Am just now getting over some of the confidence lost last year in my tumble.

Yeah, after that terrible experience, doubt I'd be a passenger again. Did you beat your husband after you healed?

Same here...been there, done that! Last year, again while riding double with the wife on the back, which we normally don't do...stood it straight up and over on the both of us. Wife was bruised but ok. I broke my right arm which turned into a nightmare break and 4 fractures w/ a metal plate and 8 screws and two operations.

As already stated, learn from the mistakes... we will not ride double and always wear helmets(it could have been my head that hit the rock instaed of my arm).

It does take a while to get your confidence back. I ride with better judgement and wisdom than before. There are some places you just shouldn't go. Just get back on and take it easy for a while.

that's kinda the way I look at it. Plus, I always get ready to bail off the quad. I've got insurance and would not be afraid to use it.

Insurance or not the quad is on it's own to save itself at some point.

Although I have them all covered, my concern is more for theft and liability than wrecking the quad.

Good feeling when you know it is going to happen, that you don't need worry about it. We had two stolen from the driveway, the only good thing was that they were insured. Thief wants them no matter what precautions you take they will either get it, or make you wish they had of.

Get your own machine and then you can be in control of your own destiny. Riding double can be dangerous we all know that and still most of us do it. I always turn it down several notches when carrying a passenger. I know I am responsible for their well being. If it gets hairy I tell them to walk it and I ride through alone.
Like daddy told me, you have to get back on that horse. If you really like riding it will be natural to get back on. If you don't like being the driver then you are at the mercy of your husband decisions and abilities. It may be best to stay off his quad in that case.
Be safe and have fun!

Glad you're o.k., or soon will be, wrangler!

Some defend to the death, riding double; maintaining riding double on a single quad in no way contributes to the frequency and severity of accidents; nemmine what the stickers say . . .

Then, in West Virginia, with the highest per capita ATV accident death rate in the nation, the Hatfield-McCoy Trail System has an almost non-existent ATV fatality rate, over 600 miles or so of high-density traffic ATV trails . . .

Among the enforced safety rules at Hatfield-McCoy--no double riding.

Bottom line--without enforcement, regardless of what stickers, the ATV Safety Institute, or others, say--folks make their own choices. And, whenever a double-ridden quad has an accident, some will say, "It wasn't DOUBLE RIDING that caused the accident; instead, it was . . ."

The number of child ATV deaths in accidents involving double (or even MORE) riding seemed high, to me, at CPSC hearings I've attended.

Yet, as stated; everyone makes his own choice.
