About 5 years ago my mom's cousin's son hit a deer while checking his crops in South Dakota. I had met him when we were kids and again about 2 months before he died. the 2nd was my brother in Sept 2006. the latest one ws last week i Wyoming. He was a friend of my little brother's. back in South Dakota we all rode motorcycles together. Not a personal friend, but just one of the guys in the groupe. Here is the article.

CHEYENNE (WTE) -- Wyoming State Parks officials have released the name of the ice fisherman from Cheyenne who drowned Wednesday when his ATV fell through the ice at Glendo State Park.

The victim was 50-year-old Michael Eisenbeisz, state parks spokesman Gary Schoene said Thursday.

Schoene said Eisenbeisz was riding in the Red Hills area when he broke through the ice at about 8 a.m. Some people witnessed the accident and tried to get to Eisenbeisz, but they were unable to help him, he said.

Eisenbeisz's body was spotted with an underwater camera and recovered at about 9:30 a.m. He was declared dead later at the hospital in Wheatland.

Platte County Coroner Tine Crites ruled Eisenbeisz's official cause of death as drowning, Schoene said.

Workers with the Glendo Fire Department, the Platte County Sheriff's Department and state parks all responded.

The state parks department said it's generally not a good idea to ride ATVs on the ice because of the extra weight.

Sorry to hear that another person you know has passed away on an ATV. I bet that makes you think a little harder about the chances you take when riding them as I know it does for me!

I see in Western Idaho, ambulance chaser lawyers have ads on TV asking those injured in ATV accidents to contact them for BIG $'S injury lawsuits. These may be common elsewhere but haven't seen them in this area till just lately.

Sorry you lost a brother in this sport. I worry a lot when riding with my brother. I am cautious to ask him along as I know he is not experienced like some of us that grew up riding.
I quit riding crotch rockets the year I lost 5 guys in our group. It was all from different stuff, road debris etc.. Just not worth the risk anymore..

While I do think this is very sad.

I'm not trying to be mean here but ATVs
get such a bad rap most of the time and this
seems to be yet another one.

I assumed by the title it was the ATVs fault
for the deaths. Like rolling on top of the rider. But they are not.

None of these seem to be the fault of the ATV
that I can see but the title leads you in that direction. Pretty misleading title.

Hit a deer? I'd assume going way to fast,
not the ATVs fault.

The second one it doesn't say how or why.

What was he doing on that lake on an ATV anyway?
Why is this the ATVs fault?

Sorry. I just get defensive when it "seems" people are giving ATVs a bad rap.

Makes one wonder if they were on a bicycle if
it would have the same type of title.

sorry NOT trying to be mean here.

Let me reread my 1st post..............nope it doesn’t say anywhere where it was the ATV's fault. Sorry I ruffled your feathers, oh wait, you weren't registered when I posted it. Did I strike a nerve to have this as your 1st post?

I was just pointing out a fact. Be careful out there. As in any traffic accident, they all are preventable. I was just reading about the school bus accident in Minnesota and an article on the same page told about a snowmobile death. 8 year old driving and hit a tree killing his mother. There have been 6 snowmobile deaths in Minnesota since Jan 1st. I bet most were just smart people doing a dumb thing or miss judging a situation. People do unsafe things all the time. I am a little more sensitive to these things as I saw my brother die. He didn't do anything stupid or dangerous, just misjudged the terrain he was riding on. He gave a little too much throttle on a hill that my other brother in years past used to ride with Honda 3 wheelers.

I am sure all of us here realize that there are dangers when riding an ATV. I am also sure we know that, unless without warning there is a major malfunction of the machine , a vast majority of the accidents can be attributed to rider error. A moment of mis-judgment or loss of attention can be deadly.

ATVQuadSquad is proud to be an advocate of rider safety and a staunch defender of OHV recreation. We are the first to respond with advice as well as disdain if we witness rider stupidity or lack of regard for the rules of our threatened riding areas.

While sometimes sad, I appreciate those who post of their experiences when out on the trails - - both bad and good. This information can give a "heads up" to many riders.

I wasn't trying to fight.
But I understand you wanting to get a little
upset with me. NO problem there.
Actually I think you held 99% of it back
and didn't let me have it.

If you read that same line in a news paper
or on the TV news what would you tend to think?

It was the ATVs fault.....

Wouldn't you agree.

Well that is the way I read it.

The title of the message just leads one to believe that it was the ATVs fault.

You read all over the place how ATVs are such
a bad thing. And they'll kill you or put you in a wheel chair. It's all ove the place
how bad they are. Then I saw you post and yeah
it did hit a nerve. Sorry.

"who died ON an ATV" leads one to think it was the ATVs fault when it wasn't. Had nothing to do with an ATV. Do you see my point I'm trying to make?

Should have read Now there have been 3 people I know who died because of bad decisions.

Not many people see my point of view I'll bet.

And again. I'm not trying to fight with you here.
NOT at all.

Point taken akatver. It has never occured to me to blame the ATV with the exception of a major malfunction, although the media delights in doing so. It is the same thing for them with SUV's. Most of the reporters of ATV accidents have never been on the seat of an ATV, they have little or no credibility in my eyes.

I see no fight here in this thread, just opinions and discussion. All opinions are welcome and discussion is what makes the QuadSquad thrive.

Welcome to the QuadSquad akatver and I hope to see you post often. Smile

WELCOME to the site.

I have to agree wih you in a way. We see that, we think some dummy drove out on some unsafe ice and caused his own death. When we as ATVers look at some thing we look at it in a rational way. But give someone that wants to do away with them, an inch and they will take a mile. In other words I agree not the ATV's fault but is easy to make it look that way if you are so inclined. In the headline it is the "ATV" that fell thru the ice not the DUMBARSE that drove it out there, not a mention of him. So right away it was the "EVIL devil ATV" that caused the accident.

Everything is good here.

As a side note on if it is the fault of the ATV, about 2 hours after my brother had his accident my little brother and I had to drive his truck, trailer and wrecked ATV back to Denver. On the way back I asked little brother if he was still going to ride ATVs. He said "Yes, if I would have been the one killed I wouldn't want you guys to quit because of what I did." If anything it has made us very much more aware that a machine over #500 is something to respect. Accidents happen, our job is to make them fewer and farther in between.
