This should have little bearing on which quad you should pick, but it is good info nonetheless. This is from the 2007-2008 CA certifications. The HP numbers were measured at the crank, and not at the rear wheels. This does not take into account the loss of horsepower from the transmission and other moving parts involved in getting HP from the engine to the ground. This is not the be-all, end-all to which quad would be faster, more powerful, etc. BTW, some of these figures had to be converted from kilowatts to horsepower with an online conversion tool, so these may or may not be right. There's a few that seem to be wrong to me, but that's what the conversion states.

Listed highest to lowest:

Can-Am Outlander 800__61.7 hp
Can-Am Outlander 650__55.4 hp
Kawasaki BF750 Carb___50.1 hp
Sportsman 800_________50.1 hp
Kawasaki BF750 EFI____49.8 hp
Suzuki KQ700__________48.5 hp
Yamaha Grizzly 700____45.6 hp
Sportsman 700_________44.3 hp
AC 700________________41.4 hp
Kawasaki BF650________41.4hp
Yamaha Grizzly 660____40.9 hp
Can Am Outlander 500__40.4 hp
AC 650 H1_____________39.3 hp
Honda Rincon 680______38.5 hp
Suzuki KQ450__________36.7 hp
Sportsman 500 EFI_____36.0hp
Sportsman 500 HO______34.5hp
Honda Rubicon_________33.9hp
Arctic Cat 500________32.0hp
Sportsman 450_________29.7hp
Can-Am Outlander 400__28.9hp
Honda Foreman 4x4_____26.9hp
Honda Rancher 420_____26.1hp
Yamaha Grizzly 450____26.0 hp
Yamaha Grizzly 400____26.0 hp
Yamaha Big Bear 400___22.9 hp

There are interesting conclusions to draw from this. Enjoy. Big Grin

Nice post Angela. Thanks for the info.
It's interesting that the DFI (EFI) Brute actually lost a little H.P.

I thought the same thing when I saw the BF750 carb and EFI. Shouldn't the EFI version have a little more power than the carbureated version? Even if power output is slightly less with the EFI BF, I'm sure the power delivery is a bit smoother and more consistent. They are within tenths of each other.

Another thing I saw that was interesting, a much larger difference between the Suzuki KQ700 and AC700. Don't these quads have the same engine? Maybe the Cat has a more restrictive air box? Different tuning? I'm sure Suzuki doesn't share all of its secrets with AC. But that's a 7hp difference!

The Can-Am/Bombs are on top of the game as far as HP goes (not so much for the 400, but it still has the highest rating in the 400-class; I personally was expecting more though). The Outty 500 is up there with the 650's, the Outty 650 is up there with the 750's and 800's, and the Outty 800 is untouchable, except for maybe its own little brother.

My own quad has a pretty high rating for what it is. The Rincon has a pretty low rating for what it is. Yamaha Grizzly 450 was pretty low as well; not a gain in HP from the Grizzly 400 either. What's up with that?

Angela....
AC has the new big dog coming out and it should be interesting on what HP it puts out.... They have not disclosed anything as of yet in their marketing...

The Outty 800 is a speed demon, mine is almost scary fast on accel and top speed... It is rumored that Can Am will be coming out with a 990cc before too long...Now that is real scary and could be dangerous if in the wrong hands...

Yeah, that's where I got the original post. I've added more numbers to it though. They didn't have any of the 400-500's in that list, except for the KQ450.

I know this is a late post but would like to see where it really matters. Anyone got #s at the ground? I know it isn't a BIG bore but good to see my baby 400 is still mid pack at 38 HP stock at least until it is time to open up to top end and rebuild it. Then it will more than likely become a 440 with bigger carb, new reeds and box and pipe.

Keep in mind the changes that have to happen in order to get it to develop the HP with all the buildup and also to get it to the ground. On the son's Scrambler, we went second oversize making it now 384cc from original 378cc. The we put the Hot Seat performance pipe with a high compression head. In order to get this to perform without extreme predetonation, I had to retard the timing all the way and it now it will only run on premium gas. Also we installed Hot Seats clutch kit with different weights and spring. It still has some issues when you nail it off idle and for sure it now runs hotter temperature wise even though we've upped the mainjet from 175 to a 190. It runs fantastic when on the powerband, but it lacks a little in the lowend prior to getting there and since it's a automatic, there are more issues than with a clutched vehicle that you just increase the rpm prior to dumping the clutch. It may now be in the mid to upper 40's on HP, but unless it is purpose built, it is hard to get the all around performance as they came stock.

Or, if you wanna get the power to the ground quick, dump the auto clutch, get a manual tranny and a chain. That ought'ta do it.

You could buy a sport quad and be done with it. Big Grin

He'd go for a AWD Outlaw I think if they made em. But we already found out with a prior 2WD 400 Sport that the lack of front wheel drive severely limits any winter snow riding and the same for the mud!

Colorado has mud??? Shrug

Did you see the last couple of Dakar races where Yamaha ran WR450F motorcycles with front wheel drive (2 wheel drive). Used a cable style setup to the front wheel like a big speedometer cable. Pretty slick. Don't know if that will show up in motorcycles one day.

I've been trying to find these specs for several weeks now. I haven't had any luck. This thread has already produced more than any of my google searches. Definate A+++ to the OP from me. Bow to You Now I just want to find numbers from a few that aren't on the list (Thunder cat, and sport quads)

Thunder Cat has 66 horsepower. Most of the manufacturers list horsepower in the certifications with the CA Air Resources Board and can be located in their database. CARB
