Thank you Deolman. I think that this is one that when I can afford it I will get it. You do great things for this GPS section. To bad that other Mod can't even spell GSP to help you out.

I know this is somewhat off the subject but you can get a great deal on a PN-20 right now. I have had mine for over a year and it is great. I used it on the ATV yesterday for the first time and it worked flawlessly. I was riding an old rail line (tracks removed) and averaged 20 mph. At no time was the screen refresh rate an issue. I know one of the upgrades with the PN-40 is that it's faster but for me, it's not worth $150. Same with acquiring and holding fixes. It does a great job so even though the PN-40 may be better, the imporvement is not worth the added expense. If I were buying one right now, I'd buy another PN-20 and wait until they come out with a larger screen before upgrading.

For once I read the DeLorme spam mail. There was an offer to save $150 with free shipping on the PN-40SE. Also a price reduction on the power pack bundle pack with the rechargeable battery. I also added the Ram cradle ATV mount, in the end still saving $$.

It arrived today, and looks like I made a good choice. I was able to upload the Topo 8.0 areas I wanted. It came with a 1GB flash card, I had a 4GB card and installed that instead. The "SE" comes with 8GB Internal Memory (the standard PN-40 comes with 500MB of internal memory), so I should have enough storage for whatever I throw at it.

Side by side comparison as far as screen size, it is the same as the Magellan Explorist 400 (1-3/8" x 1-3/4"). There is no guessing as to which way to connect the cord to this 1 either. 1 mind bobbling dilemma with the Magellan. Connect 1 way for USB transfers, another for charging the battery.

It was another dilemma converting files to upload your tracks/waypoints/etc to the DeLorme topo software with the Magellan's I had.

I have both National Geographic and Delormes software. As to which is better, IMHO it's 6 of one and 1/2 a dozen for the other. NG is more Magellan friendly.

Got to Colorado, turned it on, and it found me with no input from me. Saving tracks/routes was a simple click. A con maybe for some, 10 separate tracks is the max. Stopping saving and resetting the trip info was another few clicks. Very easy compared to that Magellan.

Although I do have the rechargeable lithium batteries, they seem to wear down before too long. The added 12 volt power pack came in handy. The 110 charger also seemed to take forever to refresh/charge the batteries.

Adding a way point again very easy

Uploading to the PC Topo software. No problem with the included Topo 8.0. A few clicks and all were uploading. The National Geographic Topo didn't recognize the GPS, although hooked to the USB port, the iMac put up a drawing too much power through the keyboard USB, and shut that port down.

Would be nice if you can select export only verses exporting and supplying power at the same time.

We pulled to the side of the trail going down to Ashcroft to let some Jeeps go bye. One complemented me on the wise choice for a GPS, he had the PN-20 (yellow)???

Most programs and GPS units will support the NMEA protocol to transfer data. You may also have to set the baud rate to 4800 on each as well. It may slower but should communicate OK.
