Ahh..It was awarm day today in Pagosa (49) so I decided to work on my Outlander. I had googled for heated grips and twist throttle last week and found some hits where people were putting heated grips on machines with twist throttles. I knew it was possible so, I ordered a set from Montana Jacks to experiment. The box came via the friendly UPS guy yesterday. (Everyone gets stuff via UPS in this small town.)

I'm figuring that the weak links to this installation are:
  • heat on the plastic throttle tube causing warpage and sticking shock
  • wire fatigue resulting in failure due to gassing it all the time to lay waste to those popo machines Thumbup

I bench-tested one of the heat elements with a 12V power supply and on "low" it did not get anywhere near to warping or melting plastic. Time will tell for the fatigue issue, but I have tied down the wired with a ziptie on the throttle tube close to the solder connections and left a 3 inch loop before ziptieing the wires again on the handlebars. (Wife has the digicam in Denver this weekend so no pics).

I'm looking forward to riding the high country at 12,000 feet in a rain or sleet storm this Summer and keeping my wimpy hands warm.

So how's this work? You boys in the high country use altitude like an air conditoner? Sort of like fish? If it gets too warm up topside they go deeper!

Hope the new grips work for you. My ankle still won't allow me to get out safely so my outy sits in the barn plugged into the tender. I can't risk having a problem with no riding partner.

Yep, and we make sure we come back down after the day cools off.
