How I became an Outlander owner.

My family and I were on our yearly family ATV vacation, in Lake City Co, last June. At the time I was riding a 2006 Polaris Sportsman 700EFI. This was a brand new machine; I had about 230 miles on it before we left for Lake City. The only riding I had done on this machine was mud riding. So I was ready to get it out for some trail riding. The first day we were going to ride up to Engineer Pass, on the Alpine Loop. We were about six miles from the parking lot when I noticed my water temp gauge flashing. I pull over and coolant is peeing everywhere. I had completely cleaned and inspected this machine, changed all the fluids, to make sure something like this didn’t happen. I thought maybe I had air in the system, so I pulled off into a ditch so the front end was elevated, to burp the system. Refilled the radiator with water from a near by stream, let the fan kick on and off four times, water temp gauge was staying at 190. Well we turn around to go back to the trucks since I had river water instead of coolant in the radiator. I went about forty yards before it started to over heat again. As long as the machine was at ideal RPM it would cool down, but when I tried to drive it would over heat. So I would drive until it over heated then pull over and let it ideal to cool down. This went on all the way down the mountain.
There is a Polaris and Bomb dealer in Lake City. I had the tech there look at it, he had no idea what was wrong. So he got on the phone with Polairs and they figured it out. On the Sportsmans the over flow bottle sets low on the frame. Muddy water can enter the over flow bottle through the weep hole, if you do not snorkel it. Well I had my Sportsman fully snorkeled air box and the CVT, as well as the over flow bottle. Well on a mud ride two weeks before vacation the hose came off the over flow bottle and mud and water filled the over flow bottle. When I was having fun playing in the mud my radiator got plugged the motor over heated, so it sucked the mud and grit into the cooling system. This caused a seal that is behind the water pump impeller to fail. This was a pretty extensive repair, and of course they did not have any parts. So I was faced with a problem. I had driven from Dallas Texas to Lake City Colorado, to do one thing, ride in the mountains.
1. I could trade in the Sportsman on a new machine.
2. Set on my butt at the cabin while the rest of my family rode, and ruin my vacation.
Well they had a brand new Outlander 800XT setting on the show room floor, that I had looked at the day before. The only Polaris they had was a 500EFI LE and a 05 800. I did not want a 500 and the 800 was a very early production 05, that had some issues. So they made me a heck of a deal and I got the Outlander.
So far I have put over 1600 miles on my Outlander. It will be one year old June 12. It’s been a busy year with the Outlander. I have learned a lot about this machine, mechanically and how it rides on the trail and in the mud. This is a great machine over all as a whole; it does have its hits and misses.
After all I have learned about this machine in the last year, both the good and the bad. If I had to do it all over again I would still by the Outlander.

Sounds like a good place to fall in on how becoming a Bomb owner....
For years I have been coming to Colorado ever September to four wheel around the mountains. Living in Loveland Colorado for about 8 years, gave me the off road fever years ago. My X-wife did not like to travel and after we left Loveland in 1989 back to Texas, she did not want to go back like I did. So in 2000, I became single again after 22 years of marriage. Ofcourse that was not the only reason but on with the story....
I started coming back to Colorado every year since 1995 or so. I rented Jeeps and then Explorers to 4 wheel around the mountains. Then five years ago I met a gal that lived in Longmont about the same time I did. She had divorced about 1991. We started coming back to Colorado after we met. Shortly befor we met,I made a trip to Ouray and rented a Polaris to go over Black Bear Pass into Telluride. I loved riding the ATV since I was a motorcycle rider in my earlier years. Two years ago, my new wife and I came out to Colorado and I rented an ATV in Bueno Vista. The new wife fell in love with the ATV. We had rented a two seater 500cc Artic Cat. That was it, we had the bug. The guy we rented it from said he bought ATV's every year to rent and told us to check out the new two seater from Bombardier. He was going to start buying Bombs the next season. We left there and headed over to Montrose to park for a couple of days. We went by the Bomb dealer and they had one of the new 2006 XT MAXs. We took it for a test drive and that was all it took. I ran circles around the Artic Cat we had rented a couple days before. The Polaris X2 was in the works but would not be out for another 6 months or so. I decided then that we would have one on the next trip to Colorado. We went back to Katy and I started searching for a two seater 800 Bomb. Two months later, we bought the first one. After riding the Bomb for almost a year, I decided that the wife needed her own one to drive. So I ordered her a 650 XT Max. We have not looked back..
We enjoy riding every chance we get. We decided that we would buy another two seater so we have the extra wheelbase for safety and we could easily ride two people. The Bombardiers have their faults just like every other ATV out there on the market. But so far they have not let us down on any type of riding we have been on.. And we love the power that you have with them.. They are a blast to ride... We are headed to Montana in two weeks for a couple of weeks of riding northeast of Yellowstone and west over toward Butte... We will be back to Colorado in September for our fall trip as usual...

Good thread.

I became involved in the Can Am around early 2005. Being aware of nearly ATV out there, at the time Can Am's flagship was the Traxter 650, which really didn't appeal to me. Some may argue the OL 400 was actually their flagship since it was more popular than the Traxter 650. Since the Traxter 650 didn't appeal to me, and the OL 400 was too small for my liking, I never really gave the Can Am's much thought.

However, I met Don, through Aurora Wheelers, and he began to school me in on the OL 400, with its traction system, frame, suspension, comfort, and overall ride, and started to look into it more. Right about that time Can Am released the OL 800 June to July time frame, and that machine really peeked my interested.

Early July 05, I made a few phone calls. First phone the dealer said you won't see one until Sept/Oct time frame. Called another dealer, and what do you know they have sitting on the floor. I called another dealer just too shop around for prices, and he told we have no idea what the prices are, and we won't get any for awhile. I told them about this other dealer having one, and he said if they have one, and are willing to sell it you better jump on it.

The last ATV I was interested in was the BF 750, I told myself if its twice the machine of my Grizz 660 I ll buy it. I checked it out, and rode it, and the only thing that was twice of my machine was the power. So I didn't buy it. Well, I said the same thing about the Outlander if its twice the machine of my Grizz 660 I ll buy it. Well of course it was twice the machine of my Grizz 660, and I bought it.

2600 miles later, and 2 yrs later I still enjoy riding my Outlander. It let me down in one particular area, but other than that its the only machine that gets my blood pumping. If I didn't already have an Outlander in my lineup, I would be purchasing one.

About three and 1/2 years ago I'm watching the outdoor channel and ATV TV came on. I had never been on a quad before but what those guys were doing looked like a lot of fun. I started to check out quads on the internet. Found this site and read all the posts in "just starting out" very helpfull. Found highlifter and found a lot of stuff about differant quads

The next part is not to offend or pick on any type of quad!! But this is what a new guy from the nw reads

After a few months of reading about differant quads I found I didn't want a brute force everyone said they had to much power and they were always braking down. Every one said that the hondas had questionable trans and were low on power, but were comfortable. The artic cats were not comfortable and not reliable. The Yamahas 660s overheated and burned oil. The polaris, Everybody made fun of them and I kept reading somthing about bearing troubles. Then the 800 Polaris came out and I started reading about melting problems.

Then one day on ATV TV web site I found reviews on all types of atvs. He really liked the Outlander 400 and said that if the outy came up with an "A" arm front suspension that his would be a great quad. And Also the new King Quad. I read as lot about the King Quad and people were very excited about it. Then the trans started to fail[reverse bushing, no oil].Next they were having tie rods bending.

King Quad had the fixes and I was at a dealer and gave a salesman my card and told him I wanted his best price on a king quad and an eiger and I wanted a winch on the king. Also what kind of trailers do you have. I told him to call me in the next couple of days with the price, cause after reading about these things for several months I was about to buy. The dude never called. I was a cash buyer.

Then reviews of the outlander 800 begain to show up. I wanted the quad that would ride on top of water! I read about this for 2 months and then BRP came out with a 5 year waranty. Thats all it took. I went to the dealer and told him I wanted a yellow 800xt and a red or green 400ho. I got the 5 year waranty on both quads.

Now I have added front shocks&springs,,steering stabilizer, and bighorns to the 800.

The only problem I have had to date is slightly cloudy gauge from time to time. I'm still a rookie. And still learning--I can honestly say these are the best quads I have ever owned

I have ridden motorcycles since I was 11 then in the early 90's I bought a 350 warrior, this was to ride with the guys at work. Then everybody started selling theirs with nobody to ride with I followed suit. In 2004 I decide to take up deer hunting, at the age of 50, so as luck would have it half way through hunting season I ruptured my calf muscle. Yep that really felt good! Where I hunt is pretty steep atleast for a fat man with a bad leg. Keeping in mind that I hunt with the wife's dad I approached her with the idea that I needed a 4-wheeler to make the hunt less painful plus we could also ride together. IT WORKED! We looked at every brand. The decision was made by her, simply put she said if you expect me to ride you better buy the bomb two-seater because I'm not hanging off the back. Now, I don't claim to be the boss at my house, I have enough of that at work, but I am the head of it, only problem is she's the neck and where the neck turns the head will follow. LOL. Anyway I bought the 400 OL Max XT and loved it, happy as a pig in the mud. My dealer, which is brprider's boss, is a old High School buddy and I get to ride every brand and all the new CanAMs when they arrive. So thats why I settled on the 650 Max XT last May. It has plenty of power rides great and I'm still faster than brprider, which just tickles the old man to death.

In june of 03 I want a ATV for my wife to ride because my Polaris was a hand full going down.So I tryed out a 400 outty and loved it.At that time I had A 660 Raptor and the popo so I sold the Yamaha To get the outty.Well my wife didn't like to ride her owen ATV so I started riding the outty. That when I realized you didn't have to work on you ATV every time you went for a ride.So I traded the popo for a KFX 700.The Reason I got that was because once you have the power it's inpossible to go with out it.Then my wife wanted to come so I traded my 400 for a 400 max. About a year latter I raced a 800 with my KFX700 and couldn't beat it so I had to have one.

Dream machine and the fallowing year.

Since my Outlander is approaching one year old I have been thinking about what will year two bring to my Outlander. Over the next year I am going to turn my Outlander in to my dream ATV. The Outlander to me is missing only one thing to be my perfect ATV. A “locker!” Well I have solved that problem and have came up with an idea to give the Outlander the ability to switch from two wheel drive, four wheel drive (open front diff) and all four solid locked with the push of a button. This is going to be a major project as I only have the concept worked out in my head. I have to save the money to buy the parts that the mod will require. And will have to have a machine shop do some work for me. So I still have a lot of R&D work ahead of me. I’m also looking into the manufacturing of my Adee’s Atv Stealth Snorkel system.

This next year is going to be a really big and exciting year for me in ATVing. La_mirgatx and I are working together to bring you the the most informative ATV reviews we have ever done. We have a lot of big ideas working. We will be asking “you” the reader for input on what you want to see tested next. Start looking for this new site coming soon!
I also hope to work with Cob and Gomer to turn ATV Quad Squad into the “best forum on the net.” This forum really has a good over all feel. We have a good strong “core of regular members who all have valuable real world info to ATV questions. Having “forum specific moderators” also works a lot better than having 20 moderators for the whole site. And the moderators here do not have that “police” feel to them like on other sights. The moderators here at Quad Squad also post in your thread often. We get to know the “regular members” in “our forums. This really helps eliminate a lot of problems with negative people posting negative comments. And when “opinions” do get heated we don’t just hope in and “lock the thread. We let it ride unless things get “personal.” A good post does not get locked here just because one “A-hole” says something.
Being part of the “ATV World” is a great thing. We have a gift to be able to ride where we do.

I think it is time for “us” as the “ATV World” need to start being and teaching “responsibility.” It is time to stop throwing beer cans and trash trail side. And for some like me it’s time to wake up and start wearing a helmet.

On the last ride I was trying to get a buddies ATV out of a deep trench. The rear right tire was setting on a large rock and slipped out from under the ATV. When that happened there was nothing between the rear of the ATV and air for 3 foot. The machine rolled over on top on me and had me pinned under for a few seconds. The handle bars slapped me across the nose and something hit me in the ear. I was lucky as we were 60 miles from and civilization. I am one of those guys to just don’t like wearing a helmet even though I know I should. “It will never happen to me!” Well things happen in a split second. I was being as causes and still could not stop this from happening. Now I have made it a goal to not ride my ATV without my helmet. We’ll see when the temps hit 100 plus, and when we go mud riding.

In May of 06 while out riding with a bunch of other CanAm owners were were in the wrong place at the wrong time and got ticketed. The guys on the 2up CanAm's got one ticket, I got a ticket and my wife got a ticket. They were NOT CHEAP TICKETS either. Not only was the fine hefty they attempted to take our Missouri outdoor privileges away for a year (for a 1st offense).

We decided that a 2 up machine was the way to go. Not only for this reason but just less maintenance and up keep. We looked at all the 2up quads and the CanAm won because of #1 a great dealer, #2 the passenger seat (POLARIS YOUR PASSENGER SEAT ON THE X2 IS A JOKE). I was a Polaris man up until this point.

The beginning of the quad ownership was pretty tuff. It had all kinds of problems, but the dealership worked its rear end off to make me happy and get the quad trouble free. Now it is a pleasure to ride.

It was a cold day in hell. Through the early morning mist I could see the Partridge frolicking in the distance. Next to them the deer were lazily wondering across the meadow with their noses buried in clover but keeping an ever vigilant lookout for danger. Across the other side of the meadow the sound of a chain saw could be heard. Strange, it was daybreak and someones out with a chain saw? Could it be that dude from Texas with the hockey mask? Nah, it was just me.... (okay, got the hook out of the way now I can continue)

I was seeking the thrill I knew from my 750 Kawasaki twin road bike. Every time the light turned green I got my monies worth from that bike in cheap thrills. I went to the Yamaha store and looked at some 250 dirt bikes that I thought would carry me down to the trout stream way out back. But at the age of 59 1/2 my balance and general health picture wasn't all that it should be. While my balance wasn't, my check book was backed up by a 401k plan that was healthy! I then looked at some ATV's and was undecided until I mentioned it to my friend. He said his son had just got an advertising account with Bombardier on their ATV's. I didn't know they made ATVs but certainly knew of their engineering reputation in other areas. I didn't care about the money, my 401k would pay for it and when I was done with it I expect to get a good part of my money back from when sold.

It has fulfilled that urge for me. I got the 650 Max XT Outlander. When I shove that thumb forward and cut loose the ponies it fills me with exhilaration as I fight to hang on. I weigh 250lbs. The first mile I rode it I went down to the creek out back. I dropped over a ledge to start down when I realized what a mistake that was. I mean I felt like I was viewing the bottom through my knees. That's when I learned how effective the engine braking was, I damn near went over the handlebars.

Now it's time to come home and I had to go up. The hill/ravine is every bit of 45-50 degrees and at the top the farmers plow leaves a lip to the rim of the ridge that sort of aims you straight up.....or so it seems.

I double checked the machine over while I smoked an imaginary cigarette to make sure there were no surprises once I started my run. I put it in 4W and low range. My cajones were shrinking with each passing moment so I thought I'd better get going before I lost my nerve! I shoved my thumb forward and off I went. I rocketed up that hill for some 70 yards while picking my line through the rocks and ruts left behind by heavy rains. Then as I approached the top I noticed it. The angle changed dramatically against my favor due to plowing from the farmer! I was at the point of no return, either park it looking damn near straight up into the noon sun or grind my chin into the front luggage carrier and grin and bare it. I chose the latter. I shot out over the top of the field and had the presence of mind to get off the throttle just as I caught air. She squatted down easily on the cornfield and a second later when I realized I had survived I punched her one more time and once again she screamed and brought me home ahead of a shower of dirt! I must have looked like Haley's comet coming across the field!

After that ride, my wife refuses to ride with me anymore.

You guys are cracking me up, makes me want to go out and do some donies in the driveway....

I've never had a quad I didn't enjoy at some level, the SP700 carb was a disappointment to me, but the SP700EFI more then made up for it. I had been watching for years for a better balanced, lighter weight quad that had some power. I loved the SP500, but it didn't have the power I like in this altitude. I hate to admit it, but I always thought that quad would be a Honda. I guess I had more faith in them then they do. The Rincon has it's plus's, just not my style of riding. I had been following Outlandish and LaMigra's posts for a while and was waiting to see what BRP had up it's sleeve. Finally the 800 was released and the factory demo team was coming to town. I got to test ride it in a rutted out sand pit. The power was obvious, it was well balanced and felt more stable on off cambers then my SP700. Upon inspection, first thing I noticed was that it would need skids, not an option from the exposed parts I saw. I never imagined it would become as big a deal as it has. Seemed pretty simple to me.
I started planning right away on how to get one of these yellow Bombs, took a couple months, but I finally found a good deal in Laramie WY. I put over 1500 miles on it the first year, and expect to hit 3000 after the second, I've never put that many miles on one before, so that should say how much I like the quad. I need to get the computer flashed, it likes to fart and burp when I first start it, and sometimes it takes 2 or 3 pushes of the button, it gives Cabman a chance to work on his numbers though since i can always hear him back there counting, my gauge steams up too, especially when snow hits the engine. The weak link to me is the suspension, the visco is fine for my riding. I'd buy another in a heart beat....

ATVer. La_miratx's outty would start and die from the day he got it. After he adjusted the valves it fixed the problem. That maybe the problem you are having.

My turn. I started riding dirt bikes when I was about 10 years old. Thirty three years later riding a quad and a cruiser street bike now. What a fun time has been had over those years. After getting out of school and going to work for the phone company, I bought my first ATC. I owned two of those. Then graduated to four wheelers. I went through five of those before getting the current one. I've owned Honda's, Suzuki's, Kawasaki's, Yami's and a Polaris. They were all fun. I was doig dune riding with a KFX700 and realized that bike was faster than I wanted to go. So I sold it. But, I always get the itch when I don't have a quad to ride. My parents(in there 60's) finally found out how much fun riding quads was. Wish I could have got them interested sooner. They both own Bomb's. My dad has a traxter and my mom has a 400 Outlander. I rode it back when I had my KFX. I was impressed with the 400's power. When that itch came back, I was hunting for a Bomb 400. I didn't want a big bore again. And being divorced, couldn't actually afford one. So far I am very happy with my purchase. I am doing my first trip to Colorado with a quad in about a month. I am excited. I have been Jeeping out there for 6 years now. Looking forward to the freedom a quad will offer. That's it in a nutshell.

Sorry I have been gone for so long. I took a new job two months ago as the Service Manager for a Kawi, Suzuki, Polaris, KTM dealership. I am driving right at 200 miles per day round trip, so my free time has been very limited. Also we had a really hot summer here and riding has been pretty slow, but the cooler temps are coming back and riding season is getting back on track. So I will be around more than I have of late.
