Been away for a long time, lots of work...
Im selling my 06 Sportsman 500 LE...
and would like your opinion on this atv.

I am not familiarized with CanAm, and the closest dealer is 200 miles away..
my popo, has given me hard time about for 2 years, but some good memories too.
I really like this atv, if you give me the complete rundown on the 08 models it would help me allot, to cleaar my doubts.

Pros, Cons, strenghts, weakness...

Its either this atv or a RZR....and I have'nt made my mind.

Thanls allot

Hey Burner

The Outty 800r is the 09 models that won't be available until about August... But, I can tell you any model 800 is a plush ride with tons of lip flapping power...

Power=Great
Ride= Great
Handling=Great
Reliability=Great

Only weakness on the 08 and earliers is the lack of a skidplate, which is needed for sure.. Other than that ..one fine machine and the only one I will ever own in the future
I have owned Suzuki, Honda and Polaris for your reference...

Hi Stealth...hhmm....Voodooo....lol
I was hoping you'd jump in, as you had a Balck Stealth 800....right?????

The reliability is what's bothering me!!!
With my Popo, it gets the flu everytime it goes on water....this weekend a bunch of friends got together and organiced a ATV race..with mud bogs, jumps..etc..
and guess what, 5 ot of 5 stock polaris had issues when wet....constant shuttering and backfires!!!
Besides, mine has gone to the shop too many times...thank god for extended warrany

In terms of quality and craftsmanship...
how would you rate, hondu, popo, outty's and yamaha's.

As far as rating Quality and Craftsmanship...

I would say all have their lemons, but I have seen more problems with Polaris owners than the others...I am not bashing Polaris because these riders are hard as hell on their machines....
As far as Honda , Can AM or Yamaha..it is probably a toss up.. the only real difference between those three is Power...

Voodoo is right of course, it's really hard to go wrong with any of them. Got any friends that can let you ride theirs before you buy?

I've had my Bombardier longer and put more miles on it then any other ATV I've owned, and I've had most all of them at one time or other.
It NEEDS skids, and footwell protection, and the brakes sound like they are going to give up any minute when you get them wet. But it is ALWAYS fun to ride.

We came across a RZR on a real rocky trail last week, boy did they look miserable bouncing around in that little cage...I'd like one too, but you'd have to pick your trails carefuly I think.

You really should ride the Brute and KQ too, if you haven't already. I like the Brute a lot.

Good Luck

Those things are awesome man... I woulda had one if I would have had a little more money and wasnt wanting to walk out that day with a Can-Am.. They didn't have one in stock.. the ONLY max they had was a 500 and I wasnt leaving with anything other than the 800.. Kinda wish I woulda waited around for the MAX though.. I like the extended wheelbase on them as they are awesome and more stable for hill climbs and seem to crawl right on through the mud more than the standard outty's.. Or just seems to me...
But I do know from that PoPo Touring I had the extended wheelbase of the 2-ups make hill climbing a new and wonderful experience... I wish I wouldnt have had the problems I did have with that quad.. I did like every thing about it other than only getting a couple hours out of it between tear ups!!!

The '09 Outtys have a sort of semi skid plate on the bottom frame rail. That being said, I would get a decent set of skids for it anyway. $10,000 is a lot of money to invest in a quad to trust it to a little piece of plastic. Richochet's are the best waqy to go.

Today, I visited several dealers in San Antonio, TX.
im considering a RZR, because I want a machine for 2 persons...me and my wife...
so its either RZR, Outty (or a Touring wich I dont want)

Im evaluating both machines...
form a safety point the RZR is better...obiously, it seems fun, capable and well built.
but the experience fom an ATV to a UTV is a whole different ballgame, and Im doubtfull of investing 12,000 + green ones on a machin that will probably bore me in 1 year.
I ride really hard...but take good care of my ATV, and I expect something that will hold up.
my Popo SP 500 did not, it was a bad lemon...from day 1 and that is what scares me, and I love Polaris, dont get me wrong, it has inovation, capacity, a good ride overall.
but on the other hand, I dont know Can Am..
nobody has this machine here, that I can test,
so my decision is based only on your feedback and from other forums...

the wife, loved the MAX, over the RZR easy, but the real problem for me is that if something goes wrong, ill have to drive 230 miles to the nearest dealer, which by the way did not inspire all that confidence...
either way if the machine has the Quality and Reliability like a honda, obiously y would buy it blind, but thats why hondas are best sellers, not outlanders..

But from your experiences, average, do you think that mechanically the Outty is more reliable than a Polaris or not??
What can I expect If in 5 weeks I get a new 2009 Outty max??
I already know how a Popo works, know what to expect from a RZR that has basically the same engine as a Sportsman, is the Outty all that different???

the more info you give me the better, dont be afraid to go technical on me, im really in a dilemma, here!!!!

And by the way, thank you very much for the info above..

From What I have seen and experienced over the past year is ...Yes the Can Am will be equal or more reliable tnan a Polaris...and with the 09 models out...they are gonna be even more well built and more reliable... Can Am All The Way..

I've owned 5 Polaris quads, they were not bad unreliable machines. But I have had less problems with the Outty. THe worse issue I have had with the Bomb is the Stator went out at 2700 miles. Remember mines an '06, seems the newer ones have improved in all areas.

I do my own maint, there is not a lot of difference in the 2 as far as difficulty. The manual is well written, and you can find procedures for most all work that needs done on line. Typically, valve adjustment, belts, and fluid changes.

Mine came with a 5 year warranty. $50 deductible after 2 years I think it was. I used it for the stator. What's the standard warranty these days?
