No, I had hauled the X2 out there with me, and had it all setup for the trails, with the bighorns, and the ice chest, and bags, plus all my gear in the front box. So I road the X2 all weekend. I really had no intension of buying the 800R out there since I had a better deal back home whenever they got one. But dad was wanting to trade one of his for it, so we went up to see what could be done on a trade, turned out it was too late in the season and they didn't want to take any trades. So after my long search for the thing, and it was setting right there in front of me, I just just could not resist, so I bought it. In the process I had to leave my X2 out at the cabin since I had only brought my single place trailer with me. Now I have to plan another trip to go back out and get it. Hopefully sometime next month before it gets to cold.

I took the 800R for a short spin around the cabin Saturday night before loading it up to come home. My dads Max had the wheels and tire you see in these pics on it, and I was planning to sell the Xt rims and tires since I have had a new set of 26" horns and black type 7s at home waiting the arival of the 800R. I was wanting a set of the lighter 4 ply stockers mounted on some nice looking rims for the dirt drags, and my dad wanted the 6 ply tires for the mountains, so since his 06 Max only had 90 miles on it and the rims and tires you see in these the pics, I swaped him tires and rims before heading home.

CC Did you get a XT or add all the XT parts. The reason I ask is because you have the ST tires.

Its an XT, I don't really like XTs but, I wanted black and thats the only way they offer black. Look at the post 2 or 3 up from this one, I explain in the last paragraph where the wheels and tires came from.

I am guessing ST is short for stock.

They are Carlile 26" 4 ply Badlands Radials, they are the OEM tires on non XT models.

First real break in ride and comparison to HMF 06 800 and my 840.

I took the 800R out yesterday to run it through its paces and make some comparisons with the 2 older 06' models we had on hand. The first thing I really noticed was how smooth and refined the 09 feels. The shifter is a lot smoother than they had been in the past. The guages as many of the 08 owners know are great improvement over the 06/07s, much easier to read especially when bouncing along the trail at high speed. The heat shields are improved under the seat as well. Excessive heat overall seems a little less noticable on the 800R, its not gone, but I think its been improved. The rest is about the same, great handeling, #1 world class ride, most comforatable seat there is on a quad, ect. ect.

Now on to what I am sure everyone really wants to know, how was the power??? Its power is very respectable. Yet tame on the bottom and not quite as explosive like the 06-08s. You can seem to feel a little more pull coming from the 09 from say 35-55 in comparison to the 06 800, not a lot though. I was not really seeing the 9% gain in our drag races 300 or 400 foot runs, sorry but thats about all the room we have on our track to safley allow for shutdown distance. I would have liked to have been able to try 500-600 foot passes.

Setups:

The 09 as pictured above showroom stock except for the rims and the non XT 26" Carlile badland tires not the 6 ply ACTs normally found on a XT model, it still has its bumpers.

The 06' 800 XT without bumpers, with 25" Bighorns on black Type 7 Rims and a slip on HMF pipe no TFI. With Cowtown clutch fingers. Bike is pictured below setup as it was yesterday.

The 06' 840 as descibed in my Signature. Ran light weight OEM 4 ply type tires and light weight spun alluminum rims.

The riders weights were 200 vs 280.

06 800 vs 09 800R: This comparison went 100% in favor of the 06 with the lighter rider Top, bottom, wherever it was pulling away. When we swapped and put the lighter rider on the 09' 800R, it was more a 50/50 with close finishes every time, no run aways here.
Conclusion: The 06 was the faster machine oversll, even when switching riders, it was still right there every time hauling a heavier rider and an extra 5-10 pounds per corner in added rotating mass from the 6 ply Bighorns in comparison to the 4 ply Badlands. I think things will improve with a pipe that I will be adding to the 09 next week. How much improvement I would say the typical 10% that would normally be expected from a pipe. Should be achievable with the 09' as well. Will that be enough, not sure. The 06 has a pipe and 10 % more power than stock. The 09 was supose to have about 10% more power right out of the box, where the rubber meets the dirt, we were not able to see any evidence of that sort of improvement. I will be getting my base line dyno numbers hopefully this week, and get my pipe installed later this coming week and more dyno numbers the next week with the pipe. So I do plan to find out, I had done the same testing before and after with the both 06s and will be using the same dyno and the same dyno hard surface tires I have been doing all my testing with for the past several years. So the coming test should pretty acurate.

I had my 840 there just play around with. The other 2 were not even close no matter wich one of us was riding which machines. It was runing pretty good. LOL

I would say it is probably there yust so high up there most will never see it on a regular basis, unless mods are done to bring it back into a usable range. I am not going to besuprised to see it show up on the dyno. The trick will be finding the best combination so that we can see and use it on the track. I say track, since IMO its a better riding quad as is than the 06-08 do to its tamed bottom end. But many who buy the 800Rs will want that in your face out of controll burst of power, so there will be many out there that will be a little disapointed when they first trade in the older units for the new ones thinking they are faster. I think they may very well be faster but you would need a really large area to run them out to find out.

Some really good info Shelby, have you been in any situation with it where you might notice any improvements in the Visco?

Not really, I have really not been in to many situations with the old ones that the visco was ever needed. Never been an issue for me. I tend to go around the ponds and lakes. LOL

Really kidding aside, I am not a mudder and other than crawling over the occasional downed tree on the trail, or over some rocks, I just don't get into to many situations where its even needed at all.
